Email Virus Warning

Just a quick heads-up for a majority of you that i’m sure read email 🙂

At the abuse and support addresses we’ve been receiving a large number of messages that are all approximately 211k in size. They have an attachment that is either a .pif or a .lnk file.

While I have not 100% confirmed it for myself, given the number of these that are coming in I’d say i’m 99% sure that this is another Email-virus swarm.

As always, if you receive an attachment from someone that you don’t know, delete it. If you receive an attachment from someone that you do know but they havent told you they are going to send you this (perhaps via ICQ or AIM) then eithe delete it straight away or dont open it until you have verified they expected to send it to you.

Personally I always recommend that you NEVER send attachments and never open any that you receive. If you want to send a file to someone then put it on your webspace or just send them a URL to go get it – and even then, make sure you virus scan ANYTHING you download.

I don’t know what the trojan is called, nor do I know how to fix your system if you have inadvertantly been infected by it so I’d strongly recommend getting a virus checker installed and upgraded on your system if you suspect such a thing has happened (generally everyone on your contact list sending you a mail back asking why you sent them such a big message).

If we find anything out, i’ll pass it on, if you find anything out then let us know so we can share it.

Oh, and thank you once again for your condolences.

Matt.

  4. I am sorry.

But isn’t it wonderful to think that a little dog that started out homeless ended up being so loved and cared for? And I am sure that he amde a difference in your parents lives.

  5. I’m so sorry about Springer.

I got an email the other day and the user name was "Hahaha". Should’ve been a clue to me shouldn’t it? But not! I started to open the attachment, got a warning something to the effect "do you want to scan with anti-virus?". I normally don’t do this, but this time I hit the "yes". The email had a worm which said could destroy all my files. I immediately deleted it and now wish I’d blocked the sender. I’ve learned a valuable lesson and, thankfully, BEFORE I opened that attachment.

Thanks for telling others who, like me, are computer illiterate.

  6. Now your Springer is in "doggie heaven" running through fields of wildflowers with his friends and he is no longer in pain. I am very sorry for your loss. 🙁

  7. Sorry about your loss, Matt. I know they are family, pet or human they’re in our hearts.

*god is swooping up him, letting him run in doggie heaven*

  8. Matt,

I’m terribly sorry for the loss of your friend and pet. It’s never easy to say goodbye, but I think that for his sake it was the best thing. I’ll continue to send out thoughts to your family.

  9. Matt I’m so sorry to hear about Springer. I know what your family is going through because I had to make the same decision years ago about my one cat I had.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

  10. I’m terribly sorry to hear about poor Springer. I know what it’s like to lose a pet that you love more than most people. Springer is in a less painful place now, and he’s ready for ya when you get to the point where you get to see him. I hope everything goes okay, and I’m sure Springer was the best companion anyone (or anything) could ever hope to have.

  11. Matt…

Sorry this is coming a little late…

But I wanted to let you know I’m sorry for yours and your family’s loss…

I have 2 dogs that are like little brothers to me (especially the one we’ve had for over 12 years)…having someone you care and love that much suffer hurts as worse than if it was yourself or another loved one (in human form), because sometimes there’s absolutely nothing they or you can do.

But now you and your family have your own "guardian canine angel" watching over you 🙂

    Take care…
    Dolph
