What's Your Christmas's Smell?
Thu Dec 09 2004

Usual weekly shopping day…supermarket full of pre-Christmas chaos…Gosh, I hate shopping as it is, but just absolutely allergic to it at this season...Manoeuvring with my trolley, navigating strictly to the few aisles I only needed, I’ve been thinking of Christmas time…

It’s a strange time of year, isn’t it? People going crazy, buying, retailers – even more mad, selling…as if it is the End Of The World that is coming, not the festive time…What an illogical thing – to buy Christmas gifts now only to see the same things twice cheaper on a Boxing day…All these years I’ve been listening to people around me complaining about Christmas time, how they get exhausted from all the celebration fever…Yet from about August they would already start making plans for Christmas, looking forward to it…Isn’t this strange? But anyway, perhaps, it’s just me – not understanding the thing…whatever makes people happy…

Anyway it was the other thought came to my mind that I wanted to write about…I was wondering…if people have their own “special” fragrance to each holiday. Something that will always remind them of this particular time of the year…
When I am thinking of Christmas and New Year season, I’m thinking of…oranges…
For me New Year time has a strong association with this fruit.

I thought: how funny…an orange…I’ve tried to go back in time to find the links…And I remembered…In the time and place, where I’ve been a kid, New Year celebration was really really big holiday…all the kids in nurseries, kindergartens, schools would have a parties, each would get a present – a small pack with real treasures – sweets, bar of chocolate...an orange, rarely – an apple. Orange used to be a fruit of season back then. And an expensive one too. Not any more, of course…but back in times…this little sunny ball used to delight us greatly…and when peeled…the smell of it…filling room…this is something I can’t even put into words…

Times change… for modern kids a plain orange is not any more a little bright miracle from far-away lands, but "just another fruit"…And a simple plastic bag with sweets and orange in it is no longer a great gift for squeamish young generation…Fair enough…It’s great to see improved common prosperity…

But I guess, for me winter’s festive days will always have a smell of an Orange…
