Karenina In Us
Mon Jan 31 2005

"He looked at her as a man might look at a faded flower he had plucked, in which it was difficult for him to trace the beauty that had made him pick and so destroy it." [Tolstoy, Anna Karenina.]

This is not an entry about Anna Karenina. I’ve been thinking of her for no particular reasons… or maybe it’s a weird association game being playing in my mind…with trains, swords and other seemingly unrelated stuff…

The thought was: would you throw yourself under the train and if so – for what kind of reason? And would you want it to happened publicly or privately? And how many of those who witnessed the fall would actually understand the real reason behind it? And is there a difference in how many would be watching?

Obviously, I didn’t mean the real rail track here ;-)

"But she did not take her eyes from the wheels of the second car. And exactly at the moment when the midpoint between the wheels drew level with her, she threw away the red bag, and drawing her head back into her shoulders, fell on her hands under the car, and with a light movement, as though she would rise immediately, dropped on her knees. And at the instant she was terror-stricken at what she was doing. 'Where am I? What am I doing? What for?' She tried to get up, to throw herself back; but something huge and merciless struck her on the head and dragged her down on her back." [Tolstoy, Anna Karenina.]

BTW: I've finally made up my mind and bought them, damn curtains...

The first time i read Tolstoy I really struggled with him. I read Anna K two times. Both times it was as if I were reading a new book.. So much in that one novel. I think I'd have to count it a classic.. How about you?

On the real side.. Some guy drove his truck on the tracks, but at the last moment decided it was not yet his time, but he only had time to leave the truck. when the train struck it derailed killing I believe it was 11 others.
He is being charged with their deaths.
I don't think it would be my choice of deaths.. But, then if you get to choose.. I would probably take a bullet in the head.. instant and done.. but messy, so.. better yet, an overdose of something which puts you to sleep.. and never wake up.. yeah the O.D. would be my choice. Nothing so public as a train wreck!
    How about you?

I would say, it's never a choice. How desperate we can become, Life is there to be lived and not to kill ourselves. Life is a blessing though some times we see it as a course. It's an experience with sweet and bitter tastes. We can never enjoy the taste of sweet unless we knew the taste of bitter. So when it's bitter, look forward for sweet without turning back.
