Themes First Appearance
Sun Jul 28 2024

So, today I release upon you, the unsuspecting DearDiary.Net user, the first iteration of....

Themes!

At the moment these have no customization. They're preset themes. There's presently 6 but that number will grow as time goes by πŸ˜€

Each theme comes with a 'light' mode and a 'dark' mode. The keen eyed among you may notice a little sun, or moon, in the bottom right hand corner. Clicking this will switch the mode from light to dark.

A Blue Theme Screenshot

Blue Theme in Light Mode

Above is a screen shot of the system using Blue Theme - in light mode. There is a new menu option called 'Settings' under the drop down menu when you're logged in. You cannot choose a theme unless you have an account - but you can choose light or dark mode. If you're not logged in you get the Orange theme (unless you've been logged in and now logged out - then you'll get whatever you had before you logged out).

At the moment, themes are not stored on the user account, but they will be. At the moment, they're stored on your browser - so if you choose a theme and then go to a new browser (a whole new browser, not just a new browser window or tab) then your choice of theme will be gone for that browser.

Blue Theme in Dark Mode

The screen shot above shows you the same theme in dark mode.

This has taken an incredible amount of work over the past few days and there are a huge amount of interactions under the hood to get this to work. It's very possible that something is broken and that's particularly likely in dark mode because that's all new! If you find something that is broken, please raise an issue for me. If you e-mail contact @ deardiary.net and include a screenshot that would be even better πŸ˜€

These Are USER Themes Presently

It's important to point out that right now these are themes for you as the user. That is, your Settings, Profile, The Home Page, Contact Us etc will follow the colour theme. Diaries will not yet follow the theme. They will be Orange. Or they should be...

Dark/Light Mode will apply everywhere on the site.

If all goes well with the themes then I will work on setting it up so you can apply individual themes to diaries. These will be on a per diary basis. So if you as a user have set Blue Theme, but the diarist has set Yellow Theme on their diary, then the Yellow Theme will take precedence while you're on that person's diary. Then when you visit the next diary who has Red Theme, well you'll see their diary in Red.

The choice of Dark Mode or Light Mode will follow you - the Colours will follow whatever diary you're reading. I hope that makes sense. It'll make more sense once you get used to it πŸ˜†

Once this is settled in I shall work on allowing customizable background images and things too.

One final point, if you've chosen specific text colours using the colour picker in the editor then these cannot be overriden by the theme or light/dark mode. So if you've specifically chosen a dark colour for your text then it may not show up for someone in dark mode - so be aware πŸ˜€

As always, any issues, questions etc, leave a comment or raise an issue!

Happy Sunday!

I THINK I followed all that! Ha! Just tried on some colors for fun. It's an adventure to see your work coming along... AND it shows just how much of it is needed to make a user interface. Thank you!!!

Don't want to post this in the Issues , as these might be what intended and just me not seeing the whole picture yet...(let me know if you want a record anyway and I'll add it to the Issues for you to work on. So testing the Blue Dark theme (just for the weirdness of it, really) : first thing comes to eyes : 1.Calendar dates with entries stay orange (not big deal, unless you have OSD regarding colour schemes lol... 2.Comments appeared to have come in bold, even if the entry text is in normal font. Also, I can see my links in text also came out in bold font, not intentionally (not that I remember setting them this way, anyway) 3. some inconsistence with the entry text appearing as white (for the Dark theme), and for some entries only - darker (not dark completely though, just more "subtle", yet still readable. At first I thought - it's only for the old backported pages, but for me it also happened with one of the new one too. This may be that "oddity" you mentioned might happen with the dark themes. That's do for now, nothing major at all and, Dark mode won't be my preference anyway, I was just playing. It was fun. thank you for working hard on all these changes! you can't imagine how this is appreciated!

ok, ignore half (most half?) of my previous comment - went to check another colour and had to go back to this entry to re-read and actually pay attention to what you said (duh!) so, the dark mode is just for me, NOW I get this, fair enough, no entries affected (at least, for now) the Dark Mode Comments and links font part of my previous note still valid.
