I have today implemented the first cut of uploadable background images.
!! This is a first release, it's limited in functionality !!
At the moment there is no control over the position or repeating nature of the background - so I advise you upload and experiment with what looks good. Over the next few days I'll add that functionality too.
I'll also be adding new navigation buttons as per MissTick's request, for Previous, Next etc. But I needed to see if I could make dynamic images work with the system before working out how the buttons would work and whether you would be able to upload those images too - like you could on the original DD. The good news is, you can. Or will be able to anyway.
With the background images, you'll find the settings under the Diary Settings Cog. These are per diary settings. If you have multiple diaries each one can have different backgrounds. When uploading backgrounds please consider dark-mode users too. For the sake of their eyes (and loyal readership) please don't upload a bright background into the dark-mode background slot. You can of course upload a dark background into the light-mode slot.
You WILL LIKELY have to refresh/reload the page to get your background to show up after you change it. This is because your browser will not see the change until the page is loaded afresh. Visitors who visit your page will get the fresh page.
The dark mode background must have a different filename to the light mode background otherwise one will overwrite the other. The system will do no checks to make sure this doesn't happen.
I've updated (temporarily) the background on this diary so you can see it in action.
Deleting your uploaded background will revert to the default paper background.
