Album, and AtMail
Tue Dec 09 2003

I'll admit to being confused by how some of the details are going to work, but that's why I'm a user and you guys are administrators. What happens to all the pictures in the old Salamander Album when it comes time to renew? Are they moved to my new album? Do they remain accessible, but I simply can't upload to the old album? Do I lose them completely when I stop paying for storage space on the old side and purchase a membership on the new side?

You're not the only confused one :) Here's what will happen....

AtomIC Album and AtMail will be split (and the version that I (Steve) am going to run will be rebranded). Everyone's pictures will exist in BOTH copies until such time as their Premium time runs out. At that point you'll need to resubscribe as a Premium User to who-ever gives you the best deal at the time, or more importantly, if you're using Album to upload pictures of Trains you probably want to re-subscribe to Matt's stuff, whereas if you're using your Album to store diary pictures then you probably want to re-subscribe to my stuff. But, until then your pictures will exist in BOTH places.

We'd advise that you start using whichever one you intend to go with immediately though because your pictures will only exist in both places at 'day zero' so to speak. That's to say, if you upload a new image to the original AtomIC Album AFTER the move, then that upload will NOT be reflected in my rebranded version of the album. If mistakes are made and you upload an image to the wrong one, we will do our best to migrate for you, but we can't guarantee it.

does this mean that the DD "Open Forum" etc will be split from the UKTS forum? so you're having seperate forums? :S

Yes, I'm afraid the forums will be seperated. We might however place links to each others, but that's not something we've yet discussed. Matt and I are quite happy to continue working together, but seperately (if you see what we mean!) so for people like Alan, who is a Premium User that uses both UKTS and DearDiary we will figure out what to do. Alan is probably a Premium User until the next millenium anyway so it probably doesn't matter for him :-)

AtMail will also be rebranded. Anyone using [email protected] for their email will have to pick up from the rebranded version. Anyone using [email protected] will continue as they currently are.

Whew! And here I thought that some kinda mention was now gonna be made demandin' that 4-letter curse word..."CASH"...from ALL of us.

Cash would be nice :) But if you're subscribing to DearDiary, wait until I get the new mechanism in place :) If anyone has any cash generating ideas for DearDiary then drop me a line!! UKTrainSim has been 'subsidising' DearDiary for a year or more, and Matt gets to keep all that now!

How goes the other changes to DearDiary that you mentioned before? (The easier to configure version)... Just wondering.

The original plan here was to completely rewrite DearDiary with a totally new mechanism. However, the new plan is now that I intend to overhaul bits at a time, starting with the customizer. It will begin shortly and will phaze in gradually.

Glad to see the back of me huh musik? :-) :-)

Am I allowed to answer this one? ;-) ;-)
SLAP
Ok, I guess not ;)

So one subscription would cover deardiary and the albums?

Yes, as it does now. The only thing is, if you intend to use Album with DearDiary you should start using the rebranded version of Album (when its released) rather than the existing one. I'll give more details of the rebrand in the next few days.

As always, any questions, drop em in a comment or mail me at [email protected]

Ta!
Steve.

*sigh* I think I already know the answer to this one, but the masochist in me has to ask.

My diary is heavily illustrated with photographs. Of course, the photographs all have a URL at the current Album address, which apparently will be changing. Does this mean that when the switchover is complete, my several hundred images will be broken links?

Let's see. When I joined DD it was as airendancer, and I became a premium subscriber not too long afterwards. Then I made that diary private, but still wanted to use the Atomic Album without having to pay for two subscriptions, or reload all my pics, so I kept the airendancer ID for Atomic. I have the pictures on my waterspriteflying diary, but not the smiley face. (Are we confused yet?)

Any chance this move means I could have both the privileges and the smiley face as waterspriteflying? In other words, can I change the user name without breaking all the links and/or losing my pictures?

I don't envy you the work you have ahead of us, but I do have every confidence you're up to it. Thank you, once again, for a wonderful service!

Couple of answers from my point of view...

Whether you re-subscribe now or after the split won't affect *you*, in case you were concerned. But as Steve says, money paid now goes in to Atomic, money paid after the split goes to Hamiko, so you are better off waiting for the split so you can support Hamiko, it'll need everything it can get at the start I am sure.

AtomIC will do everything we can do ensure there are no problems, at this time we have no intention of removing inactive accounts for at least a year or so so you have plenty of time to do any migrations over to the Hamiko Album after the split.

I'm sure there was more I wanted to say, but, shrug, can't remember :)

Bottom line, you folk don't have to worry :)

    Matt.

But what's the stance on Album space. (AtomIC) since this will be changing ? is it still unlimited and can I still upload anything I want?

I know the links graphic links might be broken for a while but I'm sure we can live with that, it's the best album and I will continue to renew my subscription ad infinitum and hope you guys go from strength to strength.
