The Curse of Money Island
Mon Dec 02 2002

Most of the time money makes me want to puke.

I just finished balancing my checkbook. Thank goodness it is over and I won’t have to deal with it for another month. Can one EVER have enough money? And if you do, will you ever stop wanting to puke ?

I want to have enough money to stop puking !

I mean listen, I know people who have plenty of money, but they still worry about it. What is UP with that ? Seems like if you have more than enough money to cover your basic needs, then you should at least get a frigging break from wanting to puke over it !

Is frigging a word? I hear people saying it, but should it be written ? Why do we use swear words anyway? What is their REAL purpose ?

Dictionary time.

Swear - profane or blasphemous curse
Profane – pro (before) fanum (temple) (outside the temple) , secular
Blaspheme – irreverent
Curse – call down wrath upon

I’ve been pretty down on swearing over the years. Railed at people for having such a limited vocabulary. I mean if f ____ is the only expressive word you know, I am sorry for you.

BUT, I am honest enough to admit there are times in one’s conversation and even thoughts sometimes, when regular words just don’t cut it. But when you use swear words in every other sentence, they definitely lose their power. It’s like they are diluted by overuse. So when you REALLY need one, all you have are watered down, worn out words that don’t come near expressing your frustration or outrage. Then there you are fuming with nothing at hand but limp, wimpy, frayed at the edges words that you wasted on the cranky toaster that burned your bread this morning. Tsk, Tsk. Poor baby.

I remember when I was about 13 or 14 my girlfriend and I used to practice swearing while walking home from school. (Other kids tried out smoking, we tried out swearing) We tried on swear words for size like we were trying on clothes. At first the words seemed like they had power and were highly charged forces, and perhaps something outrageous would happen if we uttered them. But after a few days of this we decided we just sounded silly. So we stopped.

You know when God cursed for the first time, it MEANT something. “Cursed be the ground because of you” is one that sort of STUCK ya know ?
But F _ _ _ you ! coming out of the mouth of a 14 year old just doesn’t
quite produce the same effect. It just sounds silly. Just as silly as we sounded in 1963. Although I have to tell you, at that point in our lives we had never heard the f word. Amazing as that sounds, it’s true.

How did I get HERE ? All I really wanted to say was that money makes me want to puke ! Must come from reading too many stream of consciousness essays late at night. My brains are addled. Forgive me ? :-)
