Unplugged for a Day
Sun Dec 22 2002

I have been unplugged for a day.

On Shabbat, (Sabbath) I don't write or use my computer. Because writing and using electricity are among the “39 things”. The things we are not supposed to do on Shabbat because they are considered work. Now I will admit that my observance of these 39 things is a “work” in progress. Pun intended. I have a ways to go before I would call myself strictly observant. But it is my goal.

Anyway, the point is that I became aware today of just how hooked I am on computer input in my daily life. (Even though I have been known to whine about the techno age….)I thought of a million things I could look up and read and do and play (SNOOD ! ) on my computer today. But it was a black screen. So after services I read books and read some more and lounged around which was nice. But the hardest thing was not writing. I felt like writing. I even dreamed of things to write about in my sleep !

So now, I need to go get my pen and journal and settle down on this cold winter night and see what is rattling about in my gray matter. It’s usually as much of a surprise to me as anyone else what comes up !

Hopefully something worth reading . . .

I usually take a lo-o-o-ng nap after shul. Then wake up hungry again.
The long summer days are a problem, but in winter when Shabbat ends early, we can pick up our pens or paint brushes, or whatever, and still have time for the creative efforts. I'd like to crochet, because I can't get on the 'puter, or write, or any of the "39 Things" that I dearly want to do because I have all that time on Saturday.
Of course, on the other hand, the short winter days make me get organized earlier on Friday so I'm ready for candle lighting.
The world just doesn't operate on my schedule.
