Monster Proof Blankets
Fri Jan 24 2003

It’s cloudy out today. And the rain is coming, I can tell.
Cloudy days are comforting. I cannot quite figure out why they make me feel so secure. However I will give it a try. But I must resort to metaphors, (the poet’s cop out). Maybe those clouds are like being safe in your bed under the covers. (Blankets are monster proof you know) When there are clouds, the sky has a ceiling, a dividing line, an end. When it’s clear, that sky goes on forever, right out into the universe where stars are exploding and gas giants are spewing out noxious fumes, galaxies collide and black holes are consuming solar systems. Shudder…..

Who can understand such a place? It’s so huge that if we fell up, we would keep on going for a long, long time. I wonder if the clouds would keep us from falling up ? Have you ever flown through huge cumulus clouds and wondered what it would be like if you could walk among them? They look like inviting mountains, if unnaturally shaped ones. (Which would make them even more interesting to climb. ) These vaporous formations give dimension to the heavens, narrow them down to a more manageable wonder to contemplate. Something I might be able to get my mind around.

So I am thankful today to be able to look out my windows at the darkening horizon waiting for the rain to start falling from the underside of my monster proof blankets in the sky.
