Unemployed in the Garden
Sat Mar 08 2003

Well chickens*, here’s the scoop.

I talked to the nursing director and it seems that the position I was interested in has fallen under a re-evaluation process and they are not hiring at the moment. And further, it sounds like I would not have had the current experience they were looking for anyway.

Back to square one. My application is in at the local huge chain bookstore. I’m thinking of going over to their competition and putting one in with them. They aren’t as big, but hey books are books right ? How bad could it be to be surrounded by books all your work day eh ? (please don’t burst my daydreamy bubble okay Rachel?) :-)

But enough of this downer stuff. What about the garden ? Ah, well, this is a different story. Nature is much kinder than the marketplace, and the only qualifications are that I show up in good faith and be willing to sweat.

I got the job.

I have finished weeding the entire back flower bed. It’s 4 feet deep and about 50 feet long. All the perennials are pruned and some are now budding out. I was especially glad to see the potato vine which I whacked on severely, was forming purple leaves on what looks like dead stalks. (Whew!)

The peach tree has 2 blossoms that are actually opening. I kept going over to it yesterday to see if they smell nice, but they haven’t opened far enough for me to know. I have never had a peach tree before so I don’t know if the blossoms are sweet smelling or not.

My plastic netting is keeping the cats away from the areas I have planted but I need to cover the rest of it. I am hoping to get them out of the habit of even trying to use it for kitty box central. ( I think Bob is inviting his friends over at night ) If I find out he’s been charging admission, some kitty booty is going to be thumped.

I took some lilies out of a pot they have been in for 3 years and planted them in their very own spot in the yard. The 4 bulbs had turned into 10 in that time. I felt like I was planting precious stones that multiply! That’s what’s so wonderful about gardening, the plants give back so much more than you are expecting.

I am haunting my little peat pots by the kitchen window, looking for the first seedling to sprout. None so far. When I was planting the tomato seeds, I looked at this tiny thing on the end of my finger and realized that by the end of the summer that speck would become a huge plant and produce pounds and pounds of tomatoes. It’s a miracle. I never take it for granted.

Maybe that is why gardeners look so serene. They walk in the knowledge that miracles do happen. They have witnessed hundreds of them, and no matter what, you can’t shake them from their faith. I read once that a man with a theory is at the mercy of a man with an experience. I don’t know who said it, but I LIKE it !

Now if I could only talk someone into paying me to garden. . . I would be a rich woman.

*Chickens. A word I have begun using since hanging around my daughter in law who calls her daughter her little “chicken”. She refers to herself as the mother hen :-)

I can't wait to get started on my garden. Spring is peeking around the corner here in Southern Indiana. I thought about applying at a book chain also. I may still do that. I had a friend who worked at one and enjoyed it. Good luck to you! *smile*

I know envy is one of the cardinal sins, so let's just say that I wish I had a garden, too. All I can grow is greenery in pots.

After having had experience in the hospital and nursing professions, I think I prefer the book store. So go ahead and apply at every book store in the county. Besides, if you didn't know it, they give employees a discount on purchases. How can you go wrong there? You get paid for your time and they even appreciate it enough to give you a cut of their profits. Sounds like a deal to me!!

    Good Shabbos.

Why don't you put your name down in a local nursery or garden centre, whatever you guys call them, for some work? You never know and you'd be in your element. Personally, I think the book shops sounds like a great gig, though. ;-)
