To Catch a Train
Thu May 15 2003

This morning I arrived JUST on time for my job, instead of 15 minutes before because the STUPID change machine at the train station would not take my dollar bills and give me back quarters politely as it had done every other morning. So while I fiddled with that the train left and I had to take the next one. Machines suck.

People now, people are interesting. At the second stop after mine, an Asian woman got on and quietly sat down next to me. She got something out of her purse and I glanced over to see what she was doing. She had her rosary in her hands, one with the most beautiful ruby red beads. She sat there and said her prayers to herself. I was amazed and surprised. It was kind of cool. Like sitting next to a meditating person. Then I thought about the tefillin that Jewish men use to pray and compared it to this rosary. They seem like they fulfill a similar function. Since I am not a Jewish man and therefore do not were tefillin when I pray, I sat there and hummed Chasidic melodies to myself and wondered if they might harmonize with someone saying the rosary in the spiritual realm.

Well I DID get to work at 7:30, not a moment to spare. As soon as I walked up to our work area, people started coming and we dove into the day. It was a steady stream for quite a while and we were hopping, but not overwhelmed. Then I got curious and asked someone what time it was (I also forgot my watch this morning) and they told me it was 11 o’clock! I was stunned. That seemed impossible that 3 and a half hours had gone by.

The young woman I am working with is engaged to be married in a month, but several young men working at the convention did not seem to be put off by her engagement ring. They found reasons to come by and see “us” and finally, at the end of the day, one of them asked her out for dinner. She oh so politely declined, giving the reason that she was getting married soon. It was so sweet !

It’s probably a good thing that she IS engaged, as I think we could have ended up working the kissing booth instead of the badge holder booth!
And “I” would have been taking in the money big time !!! E would have been in charge of the kissing I am sure. . .

I’m going to miss her when this job is over, although we both still work for this same temp agency, perhaps we will get another assignment together. We have had a lot of fun together.

Anyway, one more day and I’m done. And that’s true on more than just one level! I am about ready to get back to laundry and baking for a while. And I saw my scribble book moping at the little desk in the cupboard this morning. I am going to have to spend some time with him soon.

Isn't it amazing the things that we experience each day, if we only look, to see, what ever our religion, the different ways we have to communicate with our god, and to be accepting of it, just for the beauty of the comemoration. You are a very perceptive woman.

RYN: Opendiary.com is probably the the most sophisticated diary site on the internet. It is not perfect, and it does charge $25 for 6 months membership, but it is easy to maneuver in, easy set up, no popups, and membership is restricted to 10,000 members. Freeopendiary.com is where it all started and it is free. Problem is that it has a lot of down time and it allows pop ups. Then there is Diaryland.com which is pretty good, and free. Mydeardiary.com is another one. That should keep you busy for a while lol....but I would be glad to answer any questions that you may have. Aloha and shalom.

Count on it. A machine will mess you up every time when it's most inconvenient. Well, you got to work on time anyway.
Isn't it amazing how time flies when you're having fun!
Should have been a Buddhist on the other side of the rosary lady sounding his/her mantras. That would have been interesting. Mantra, clicking of beads, Hebrew melodies. All together giving praise to the Great All.

    Shalom.

Machines are a necessary evil, its good that you've been enjoyed your job but I can understand about the comfort of doing ordinary things again. I'm sure you would have taken lots of money in on the kissing booth, your young engaged woman who everyone was coming up to was obviously just the 'beard' for the love struck mens true intentions;)
