Truth In Advertising
Sat Feb 07 2004

I looked at that last entry and the size of the font is a little "in your face". Sorry. I hope this is better.

Lest you think my garden a veritable horticulteral marvel, the truth is, it is still in winter mode. There are just a few signs of spring. I wanted truth in advertising, so I went outdoors and took these pictures. Please excuse the out of focus flower, and please notice the FOLIAGE is in focus. The silly camera chose THAT as its main thing. Technology will only go so far ya know what I mean?

Here is the very first thing blooming. It is a hardy daisy plant that re-seeds itself freely, and I encourage this tendency.

And here we have the garlic bed. This is my first attempt at growing garlic. Hub Man (hubby) picked out the variety from SeedSavers last year and they mailed it to us at planting time a few months ago.

And last we have the volunteer sweet peas from last year. I had to thin them out and may have to thin just a little more, so say goodbye to some of these. I have a tendency to let a lot of flowers go to seed. Sometimes my garden looks scraggly in the late summer, but then I get these hardy volunteers for my patience.

Today there are many errands to do, and cooking for Shabbat dinner tonight. It's clouding up to rain, but I don't mind. Good soup making weather.

My friend D. and I picked handfulls of wild narcissus again the other day, and they are keeping me company here by the computer. It smells like the perfume counter at Macy's. Mmmmm.

Well, off into the fray.

(I have to go clean the dirt out from under my fingernails. I could not resist pulling a couple of weeds when I was out there!)

I always fancy that I would like to garden, but when it comes right down to it, I don't have the patience. Besides, after trimming the hedges, mowing the grass, pulling the weeds, raking and stuffing into yard waste bags, I am SO THROUGH with my yard I wish it would just DIE and I certainly don't want to go plant things and coax them to grow. Give me a nice apartment with a terrace pot-garden that I have only to water and prune to keep nice.

I still think your garden looks pretty, don't make me go outside to our porch area and take pictures of the scrap heap to prove my point! :)

Hub man heeeheee. I will take your advice re the inner doomsayer. At least your garlic bed will keep any vampires away.

Hardy daisy - is that a true daisy? The leaves look different than the hardy daisies that grow wild in my part of the world. The picture looked a lot like a flower we call "fleabane" here, which also is hardy and goes to seed nicely, but it's hard to tell from a two-dimensional picture exactly how long the petals are and what the leaves really look like.

Think twice before planting fleabane. The stuff has an astringent smell to it, and grows like a weed. It's really nice in gardens, but if you ever get tired of it, it will take years to get rid of it.

    lovely and thankyou :)
i'm guessing this is in response to my request for garden shots, so it'll be wonderful to see your garden begin to come alive again once spring hits

Our flowers won't look like that until mid-April. Luckily this year I'll be home and able to work outside more than ever before. I wonder if Maisie likes to garden?

I love daisies, they are my favorite of all. Happy little flowers!

RYN: I like crocheting much more than knitting, the textures in the stitches seem interesting to me and I enjoy the procedure of each stitch. Funny that you like the plastic knitting needles though, as that is the one thing I do miss with the single hook - that whispy clacking of the needles as they move against each other. When I read your comment it brought back vivid memories of the sound of my paternal grandmother's needles... you may have inspired me to try to knit again!

My favorite place to crochet is curled up on the sofa watching a good movie. Very soothing, very relaxing. I can feel my blood pressure dropping after a bad day.
