Geeks Outing
Mon Aug 09 2004

Hub Man and I took a trip over to Fry's Electronics Supergiganticus Store today. He wanted to get some teeny tiny batteries for some of his guy toys, and I wanted to get a look at an actual tablet PC.

For those of you who don't know, that is a computer that you can write on the screen with a stylus and it converts your handwriting into text. The Luddite in me rebels. The geek in me salivates. I took them both over to have a look.

Now Fry's is a HUGE place and they have everything techie. But they only had one tablet PC. The salesman led me to it and lo, it looks just like a laptop, with a keyboard and everything, but the screen swivels around and folds over so you have what looks like a Star Trek version of a tablet. I was very excited to see this neat trick. But I wanted to WRITE on it. Well, guess what? They don't have the stylus. I said, "You must be joking?" Nope. They don't have it. Too bad. What they DID have however was the price tag, clearly marked. $2300.00. Gasp! Urk! (The Luddite smirked) Ah well, perhaps in a galaxy far, far away, I will be able to afford one of these little wonders. By the way, it weighed about half of what the Sony laptop did that was right next to it.

I asked Hub Man how long he thought it would be before they were affordable .... (my idea of affordable is 600.00.) He said, "Three years or so."

"I can wait." was my reply.

I can wait to be Jean Luc Picard leaning back in his ergonomic ready-room chair scribbling naughty limericks in French on his computer tablet. I'm a patient person.

What we DID buy, (paid for by some of my jealously guarded allowance) was a CD player for our car. Hub Man has many old radio shows on CD that we would like to listen to in the car when we are on trips. Fibber Mcgee and Molly will be a welcome addition on our rides to the mountains.

That's about it from here. Except that we now have a batch of peach freezer jam setting up on the counter. That leaves about 10 peaches in varying states of ripeness.
I think they will be eaten fresh. I just can't bear to cook them. It doesn't seem right.

If you are Jean Luc, does that make Hub Man Number One?

As I recall Jean Luc never wrote anything. All he had to do was talk and the words just magically appeared. The computer even understood his french accent. Now that is my idea of a computer.

hmmmmm I wonder if it added the accent to his reports?

Oh well, it's a shame it costs so much, but like I think you already know, it's not essential. Glad you're making the most of your peaches. ;-)
