A Farewell To Rags
Tue Jan 25 2005

Today I am sorting through clothes in my drawers and closet to either throw away or give away. FlyLady has got me on a roll these days. . . and winter is a good time for it too. Plenty of indoor time to sort through stuff and make some hard decisions.

But in my zeal to declutter, I had to stop and take a few moments to mention two items that it gives me pain to let go of. And I am not a very sentimental person in this department. I'm a ruthless thrower awayer from way back. But these two things stand out.

One is a tablecloth that as far as I can figure I have had for 21 years. When I bought it, it was an extravagant purchase. It's a homespun cotton thing that at one time was a very pretty Pennsylvania Dutch blue and white. I used it during the boys growing up years and it survived all the milk spills and spaghetti mishaps just fine. But time has taken its toll on the poor thing. Too many washings, and too many afternoons in the summer sun on the clothesline have it looking only a shadow of its former self. It is thin and pale and worn to the point of collapse. And I am about to throw it into the garbage. I already have a box full of cleaning rags. I don't even need it for that. And it is too raggedy to give away.

The other is a sweatshirt kind of top that I think I have worn for 15 years. It has a white background with blue flowers all over it. I wore this particular shirt to a particularly epiphanous workshop weekend I went to one time, and I have some VERY fond memories of same. It has worn like iron, but alas it has begun to sag and has faded patches at the elbows, and frays at the cuffs and is really no longer fit to wear in private, let alone in public. It is made of unsuitable fabric for rags, so it too is going in the garbage.

Some things that we buy and use, serve us better than others. And these two objects deserve an honorable mention.

So farewell faithful fabrics, go forth to the great fiber hall of fame in the sky. Rest in Peace. And thanks for the memories.

BTW.... haven't heard a peep from Bookworm in a few days. Does this mean the baby has been born??? Hope so! :-)

Being the avid scrapbooker and journaler that I am... I say either take a picture of the items as they are today and add them to your journal or find past pictures of them when they were in their prime! Keep the memories, chuck the clutter!

Thanks for checking out my new blog, I added several photos today. Oh my, I feel a new obsession.

i was just thinking of bookworm on the drive in to work today too :))

as for throwing away, you are very brave. those are 2 things i would keep for sentimentality's sake, but like you i need to chuck out some of my old clothes although there are not many to get rid of. some of the stuff i no longer wear gets added to my fancy dress wardrobe :)

awwww! you can't throw away the tablecloth! I know this is anti-Flylady but oh the memories! I don't know why but I have a thing for towels and tablecloths. Maybe you could just cut out a good square of it and put it in a box frame..

Somethings really do get hard to throw away. Just ask my husband. He has a tee shirt from his college days that he has not worn in twenty five or more years. The thing is tattered and because it has maroon trim (which still fades by the way)it is useless for anything, but he will not part with it. You should have seen his face the last time I tried; pathetic, I tell you, it was just plain pathetic. *Sigh* :)

Here's to the things that have served us well and here's to the ability to let them go when the time comes. I salute you!

It sure is hard to let go of something that has lots of memories attached to it. Like throwing away the memory. There should be a Hall of Fame for stuff like that.

I have some very nice clothes in the back of my closet that I just can't bear to part with yet. I'm still waiting for those 10 pounds to leave, and the clothes will fit again. When is it time to give up?

    Shalom

There is an old insulated coffee mug in the cupboard which I think will be here forever.

I was just pondering bookworm too! I hope everything went well for her.
