Peach Dreams
Wed May 09 2007

There's a population explosion in progress in our back yard.

Green fuzzy orbs are expanding on the peach tree.

They are about the size of golf balls now, and my thoughts turn to how to protect my sweetings from marauding Blue Jays.

I have netting. I may have to wrap the tree in it. Though it looks fair ridiculous having a tree with a hair net on all summer I can tell you. And I caught a stupid Jay in the tree once even with the net, year before last.

I also thought about getting a fake owl to put on the fence nearby. I don't know if that will work. I may have to do a search and find out what the tricks of the trade are with peach trees and birds.

But for now they are safe I imagine.

There's nothing quite like lounging in the garden swing looking up at them peeking out from the leaves.

I can smell the peach butter simmering already.

    Lucky!

I have no orbs on mine...yet. I don't know if I will get peaches this year or not. Only time will tell.

Well, good luck with the jays. And a fake owl doesn't work. Doesn't work with pigeons, so you can bet it won't work with in-your-face-Scrub Jays.

    Peach butter. Mmmmmmmmmm!!!

I'm so so jealous! All the Georgia peaches got frozen over Easter weekend during that horrible cold snap. Those look lovely so far!

Jays are akin to squirrels and bold . How about making a Cat perch in the tree ??? might work and make the Cat play games and you can enjoy the battle.

My aunt used to buy lots and lots of toy rubber snakes and fill up all their fruit trees with them, and it seemed to work.

I don't suppose you have a Dollar store near you that you could wipe out their toy snake inventory?

I'd wrap the little jewels in netting and perch Ali's rubber snakes in it for good measure. But then again, I'm somewhat obsessive compulsive. :)

Throw a couple of fake snakes in your tree. Birds hate snakes!
