Hen Picky
Mon Jun 25 2007

Through the magic of letting time go by with the added elements of sweat equity and gardener's patience, an interesting thing has occurred in my yard....

Remember this?

Now it looks like this:

Here is a close up of one of my favorite additions:

[album 65561 Woodruff.JPG]

It's Woodruff, a very nice plant. It was given to me by a friend. I dug up a bit of it from her yard and transported it almost 300 miles to its new spot. I'm told it likes to take over. I'm all into that if it has a mind to.

Along with the Woodruff I have planted Butterfly Bush, Blackberries, Feverfew, Sweet William, Creeping Thyme, Sedge Grass, Cyclamen, Star Jasmine, Lavender, Peppermint, Dichondra, and a fern of some kind that I cannot remember the name of right now.

Some are doing better than others. I figured I would try a lot of different things and see who was happiest in the environment which is a challenging place. It is sort of shady, but at certain times of the day becomes a bit of an oven because of the reflection of sun off the south side of the house. I'm sure it's very confusing for the plants.

But we have picked and eaten blackberries and the butterfly bush is blooming away, so the place has potential. Right now I am covering the bare dirt with grass clippings, but one day if I feel flush, I'll buy some bark mulch to cover that red red clay.

Anyway, that's the scoop from my back yard today.

[album 65561 GoofyHen2.JPG]"Just SEE what a little
focused labor an achieve?
Quite nice, I must admit.
Now if I could just get her
to be this dedicated
in regards to washing
windows, I might have
cause to rejoice.
But as it is, in my opinion,
there is still work to be done...."

Oh I love what you've done there!

Little Red, I have come to the conclusion you will never be satified no matter how much work she does. Get a grip!!!

Now that's what I call transformation! Beautiful.

I see there's room for more planting. Looking forward to even more transformation.

    Is the Hen *ever* satisfied?

    Bless the day.

Why pay for the mulch? Use that area for your grass clippings and other composting type materials and let it be a living compost pile. The plants will undoubtedly love it, and it won't cost you a penny! In fact, I bet some of your neighbors would pay you to take their grass clippings and other compostable materials! Or at least give it to you for free...

    Great Job!!

I love how you have used that small space.

I am inspired now. My yard is very ...umm....eclectic. Which is to say an absolute mess. No planning at all.

That is lovely! It will be interesting to see which of several of those invasive plants wins in the end. It will be a regular jungle in that little space by next year, I expect.

Please pass this on to the grumpy one:

    Dear Hen,

    SHUT UP!

    Sincerely,
    404error

I swear, that hen just needs to spend some "quality time" with a big ol' rooster! Once she has a clutch of fertile eggs to tend, followed closely by a whole flock of chicks to herd around all day, she'll leave you alone!

My mom has Woodruff and it does tend to take over, but in a most pleasing way. I think you'll really like it, but I about choked when I saw you planted blackberries. They must be a more manageable variety than what grows around here. If I fail to see and pull out every little sprout that pops up they soon becomes house eating monsters that require serious chemical warfare to beat back.

psssst... come on over to my house now, okay? That garden is lovely. Just come on over. I don't have any ulterior motives, I promise. I'll let you play with yarn, too. Scratch that too, didn't me to say too. Just come over, okay? ;o)
