Anticipation Reaches Excruciating Proportions
Tue Aug 07 2007

Something amazing is happening in our back yard. Something I never expected to have with in a few feet of my door.

Growing up in the mountains does not prepare one for this kind of thing.

Apples? Sure.

Pears? Absolutely.

Peaches?

Not so much.

In the last few days they have turned this wonderful red blush color and therefore show up very well. I didn't realize there were this many. Before they were green and hard to spot in the heavy leaf cover. They are of the variety O'Henry.

No. They are not ripe yet.

I squeeze.

They resist.

I persist.

They remain adamant.

We are not ripe yet!

Once in a while one will fall off, like unripe fruit will do from time to time. It's always a tragedy to us. Some of the fallen get attacked by ants. Some split open a bit. Others look just perfect, but they never ripen. Yesterday a fallen peach even got chewed on by a mouse. (Hub Man and Hamlet saw the mouse, Hamlet gave chase. The mouse escaped.) I retrieved the peach and sure enough, it had teeth marks on it.

Peaches are my favorite fruit on the entire planet.

They are growing in my back yard.

This must mean something.

In Pirket Avot (Sayings of the Fathers) it says:

"Who is rich?
He who is content with his lot."

Well then, I am very very rich indeed.

Peach rich.

But I have to wait a little while longer.

Before I come into my inheritance.

(Even MY mouth is watering at the prospect. . . )

As well it should.

WHOA! That's alots of peaches! My landlord's peach tree doesn't have much of peaches, I guess the ice storm that we had last Feb ruined it. Oh Bummer! They didn't have to do with it and if their peaches are good. I would make peach jams. Oh boy, Yours are good!

    Hugs, D

Will you *just look* at those beauties!!

I have some Harry & Davids in my fridge. I'll wager that yours will be every bit as good. With a crop like that you must be planning some canning. Eh?

    And peach cobbler.

    Peach jam.

Oh my! I'm gonna sign off before I drown myself.

    Bless the day

:o) I just told Rick this evening that we should go check out an orchard or two this weekend, just in case any survived the freeze in April. Keep your fingers crossed!

we had peach trees when I was a child. I remember going out with my dad when I was very small and picking them. We'd then find the old hand cranked ice cream maker. Dad would load it up and I'd sit on the top while he cranked away. Usually he'd read the news paper to me while we did it. The peach ice cream produced was some of the best I've ever had.

Thank you for the trip down memory lane!

They sure look yummy. I hope they ripen soon. You'll be all drooling by that time, though. ;-)
