Isn't It BORING In The Country? What Do You DO All Day?
Fri Aug 31 2007

The next day I spent mostly on my own. S. had hiking plans already arranged with her neighbor. I had plenty to do however and stayed busy all day.
The first thing I did was to go out in the back yard and pick some blueberries.

Now up until this point in my life, I didn't think I liked fresh blueberries. All the ones I had ever eaten from the store had tough skin and didn't taste that great. These however were magical. Smaller, juicier, sweeter and tender to the point of being delicate.

I ate a few...

(Tell the truth there Cupcake....)

Alright, alright.

I stuffed my face.

I felt like a bear fattening up for the winter.

I had a purple tongue!

Notice the new berries coming on are right next to the ripe ones. You must have patience to pick blueberries. You can't just dive in there and strip the plants, unless you want to destroy the new crop coming on. I'm surprised, come to think of it that the birds hadn't eaten all these berries. I'm gonna have to ask S. about that.

Anyway.....

I had brought a bowl out with me and I picked some to take in the house. I nibbled on them the rest of the day.

Here they are:

Flanked by a couple of the lemons that were destined to become Lemon Curd as S. had asked me to show her how to make it.

I then proceeded to use her washing machine to felt six wool bags I had with me. That was a rousing success. I felt so good to have them all done up and complete. Her top loader was WAY superior to my front loader for felting and I was very happy with the results.

I didn't take a picture of them that day, . . . um, . . . because I'm a ninny. I just took one here a few minutes ago instead. I have made several really small ones thinking that those might sell better at the craft fair. You know.... 'granddaughter purses', If I had any brains at all, I would make a whole bunch of pink ones. Little girls like pink. They can't help themselves. But I have been using up my scraps of leftover yarn with these, so they are more adult colors more's the pity.

Then I grabbed a giant tupperware bowl and headed out to the garden where I proceeded to pick a bunch of green beans. There were only 7 or 8 plants, but I filled that bowl till it was overflowing. I snapped them and got them on the stove.

I then took off to hang out with my brother for an hour or so and we had a great talk.

When I got home I cooked myself up some fresh eggs to eat with the green beans. That's called 'Country Supper' in my book.

S. didn't get home till after dark, so I fed the horses and locked up the chickens.

It was a very productive and satisfying day all in all.

Even though I went to bed with a purple tongue.

Fresh blueberries are *so* nice. Our plants are just beginning to flower. They're so pretty that they'd earn their place as ornamentals even without the yummy fruit.

The birds wouldn't leave us a single berry if we didn't net the plants! I wonder what S.'s secret is.

Wild berries are not that large but sweet.

Homegrown are always best. I bought a bag of frozen ones from the store once. They were big; they were beautiful and they had absolutely no flavor. The best ones come from a neighbor of mine. I'm not sure why, but hers never fail to be sweet and extra juicy.

I love her blueberries so much I put 27 pounds of them into my freezer last weekend.

Now all I have to do is teach someone how to make pie.
