Danger! Danger!
Tue Nov 11 2008

Well it's official.

Knitting can be hazardous to your health.

I have been doing a LOT of knitting lately. I haven't said much about it because the things I have been working on were gifts for a couple of people who poke their noses around here in my blog, and I wanted to keep it a secret.

I finished my projects, I had a ball making them, but ended up with a nasty little case of tendonitis at the base of my thumb. I read up about it and this one guy on Ravelry who could be a doctor, but may only play one on the internet, said to do something he calls an 'ice dip'. This fun little exercise consists of dipping your hand in ice water for 10 seconds at a time every now and again over a two hour period. I gave up on the whole hand thing and just dip my thumb and joint in the freezing brew.

As uncomfortable as it is, yesterday's treatment has reduced my pain and tenderness by about 50%. I'm continuing it today on and off.

I miss knitting. I really do. I'm a little batty actually because I can't knit.
At this point I would plunge my whole body in ice water if there were yarn and knitting needles waiting for me when I got thawed out.

The pain comes from the way I work my purl stitch. I have learned two other ways to do it in the last week. Neither one turns out as nicely as my old way however and I am fretting about the whole thing just about as much as that time I had to change my knitting technique to stop twisting my stitches all those months ago.

I'll tell you, getting old is a real... breeding female dog.

Everything is hurting. And if it's not hurting, it's getting ready to.
One little slip of the .... whatever body part you might care to mention and it takes weeks to heal. I have age spots on my age spots. My joints hurt. I ice everything that hurts now days. My physical therapist brought me over to the 'cold side'.

I only made one purchase at the Craft Fair. I bought a medical gel ice pack. Can you imagine? I could have had any number of lovely things, but I was very excited about it at the time. I have been using a bag of frozen peas for a long time. They are inedible now they have been frozen and thawed so many times.

Anyway I love my ice pack. It has little chickens on it. [I thought that was particularly fitting considering the Hen and all.]

Wait a minute....

Here ya go...

(You know, the minutia you bore these poor people with is really getting embarrassing. Have you no shame?)

Yes, I do. But I'm afraid it has a raging case of tendonitis and isn't working properly right now.

Perhaps a nice Ice Dip???

(Can you get your head in that bowl?)

Would it make YOU go away if I did that?

(Never mind.)

Damn straight.

Now that is a cute little ice bag, and so very appropriate! [But don't tell Red I said so. You know how she gets.]

I'm sorry about your sore thumb. But, Honey, you don't know the half of aging yet. Just wait. I know a little more about the subject, trust me.

The cold side is one thing.
Just try and stay away from the dark side.
Now that's the real cold side.
    The dark side, I mean.
The dark side is the cold side.
    Got it?
    Never mind.
