Out Of Season
Sun Jan 18 2009

Imagine the last picture of the back yard, only without all the bush clippings on the ground. I chopped them up, Hub Man (bless him) stuffed them into the green waste container. And I do mean stuffed. I wish we could make an old fashioned winter pruning burn pile like I used to do in the country. But here in the burbs, they frown on burn piles. I did save some of the larger limbs for my little fire pot. I cleaned it all out the other day all ready for a fresh fire. And best of all, I planted some sweet pea seeds along the fence. I am now sprouting more of them in a rolled up paper towel on the kitchen counter. I may get some more seeds this week and keep planting them everywhere in the yard. This year I want sweet peas. I want LOTS of sweet peas. They are just a little bit tricky to grow here in this climate. I am going for the volume approach. Plant 100 seeds, hope for 30 plants. Hope it works.

Of course I realize that this is January. I also realize most of the country is in the firm grip of a nasty winter. Even we are surprised by the weather we are having. It is sweater weather in the daytime, but at night we get frost, just to remind us it IS winter.

I sprayed the fruit trees with dormant spray today. I bought the kind that is supposed to take care of all the nasty things that might happen to our peaches. It smells horrible and the warnings on the container scared me. Up until now, I have only sprayed with copper spray which was no big deal. This stuff smells of sulfur and looks evil.
A sort of yellow/orange/brown color that reminded me of antibiotics for some reason. I hope it works. We are supposed to do it one more time right before blossom time. I'm not looking forward to it.  I'm only doing it in hopes of sweet ripe peaches.

Well, that's about it from the gardening chronicles for now. I'm not finished out there yet. But progress is being made.

It's a good thing too. We will be all ready in case it snows.

(Snow? Are you delusional?)

Oh goody! Snow! I like snow!

(Now see what you have done? She thinks it's going to snow. What's wrong with you?)

I know. You keep teasing me with thoughts of spring from all your yard work. We have snow in the forecast for tonight again but will be shocked to wake and see any. A girl can dream I suppose. Maybe 2009 will be the year I finally have blooming sweet peas.

I have only attemped Sweet Peas once and unfortunatley it was a dismal failure. I sprouted them and every thing, but they just didn't take. I'd love to try it again along the fence, but I'm not sure what it takes to get them to grow.

I love sweet peas, too. I can almost smell them.
    Mmmmmmmmmmm.
Just as heavenly as an old red rose I used to have.
I tried them here. They didn't do much. I think I planted them too late and it got too hot for them. Who knows? I think it might take Harry Potter magic.
    Persnickety little things.

Snow? It better not snow. If it does, I'll blame you!!

I'm sure the yard looks much better, and sweet peas all over the place?! Let me know when the first blooms show up.

    Bless

Loving hearing about the garden! I got out a book today about perennials. Even with the cold weather here I want to start some herbs indoors. Glad you got the yard cleared up! It looked very nice to me even in the 'before' picture. Nice layout. That is another nice thing about being out here in the 'Boonies' - we can burn all we want.

RYC: Yes, the dress was absolutely to DIE for!
