Harvest Day
Fri May 15 2009

A roast simmers in the oven, surrounded by onions, potatoes, and baby carrots from the farm box last week.  The house smells like a restaurant.

I had every intention of making a Lemon Chess pie today, but things got away from me and I ran out of time. Maybe Sunday.

I just pulled up all the pea plants and picked off the pods to shell later. I want to make fresh pea soup with them. It's become one of my favorite soups lately. If you don't care for split pea soup using the dried ones, you might like the fresh version.
After I pulled up the peas, I found my green bean plants that I planted several weeks ago, a little leggy from lack of sun, but growing. Plus there was a tomato plant under there that I forgot about too. I even decided to try planting tomato seeds right in the raised bed and there are four plants that made it. I THINK one of them is the last of the Cherokee Purples. But I won't be sure till it sets fruit.
It's a long way from that, being only a few inches high. It's an experiment.

(Your whole life is one long experiment. You realize this don't you?)

Yes, yes. And I have the scars to prove it.

Oh, one more thing before I go...

Here's wishing our Pragmatist a complete and speedy recovery. Last I heard, all was well...

I'm on the fence about the Cherokee Purples as to whether I adore or detest them. With a little mild goat cheese and grilled on bread with some fresh garlic and a tad of onion they're pretty good. I was told they were a good slicer (that's why I planted them year before last)but I don't care for them like that personally. I'd have given them another shot but I've not seen any for sale around here since my first foray so I'm up in arms.

My peas are still a bit away from harvest. No pods yet but not shocking given the fact that they've only been in the ground about 3 weeks (we generally consider the last frost Mother's Day).

    Garden on!

    What time is dinner?!!

I think two of the tomato plants I thought were dead might make it. I see new leaves sprouting!
    Have a nice weekend!
