Next Installment: Ladies Home Journal
Wed Sep 15 2010

Oh no, I'm not finished with it yet.

There's much more to see from the Ladies Home Journal of 1920.

In this issue there were many many ads pertaining to clothing. What to buy, what to wear, what machine to wash it in and what soap to use in said machines.

I must admit, that when I first saw the following ad, I had a powerful desire to own this garment.

I think it's something about her carefree pose and the simplicity of the thing...

I mean, what's not to like?

Here's another undie ad that was on the very first page of the magazine...

[album 65561 LHJ Undies Family.jpg]

A happy family, wearing the proper underthings.

And I guess there's no better way to sell your product than to show a pretty girl in her undies. [Some things never change.]

[album 65561 LHJ Shampoo.jpg]

There was an ad in this magazine that you don't often run into now a days...

How about the latest hits in...

sheet music.

[album 65561 LHJ Sheet Music.jpg]

Big business back then, when one provided one's own musical interludes.

Then I ran across a familiar name in the industry of floor covering...

[album 65561 LHJ Armstrong1.jpg]

Did you know [according to the ad] ..... that...

"Real linoleum such as Armstrong's is made of wood flour, powdered cork, and oxidized linseed oil, pressed on burlap. Genuine linoleum always has a burlap back, is flexible, and not easy to tear."

Who knew?

I suppose the cheap stuff was made of tar paper or something. One wonders...

Anyway, what pattern would you choose?

Darn, the pics didn't come up for me to remember my lino number. I think it was 272, but then I liked 8962. Didn't care for the last or another one. Darn!

    Okay. In the lino line-up #1, #3, #4 and #5.
If you're going to hold me to one, then #4. Wait.
    No, #5.
Oh, it is just too early to make these kinds of decisions!
Like the undie ads and music. Just don't make me pick which one I like best.
    Whew.

I like the third one from the left, actually.

An interesting fact about linoleum: real linoleum creates an aseptic barrier between the sub-floor and the linoleum. That is why hospitals still use real linoleum rather than tile, particularly in surgeries and emergency rooms. It's something about the way the linseed oil bonds with the sub-flooring. I love the way real linoleum kind of "glows," and if it wasn't so very expensive now, I'd still love to have it in my kitchen and bathroom. But, considering that it's as expensive as tile and tile lasts a lifetime, well, no contest.

My fav is 8962; the second one from the right. And did you notice how well all of them went with your tablecloth. Clearly you would have fit in and been ever so chic. :)

Oh my! I knew my old kitchen flooring was old, but it looked just like 751! Now I have new Congoleum vinyl flooring, sorry Armstrong.

I would like a set of those athletic underwear, though.
