The shiny is wearing off my cast.
It’s still a purty color, but lugging it around is ... interesting. I’m having to be careful not to strain my body doing all the weird things I’m doing to get around the house in a wheelchair and occasionally crutches. I already pinched the toe on my left foot while wheeling around the kitchen. I went right away and found a shoe to put on. I’m wearing it all the time when I’m up and about. I NEED to keep my left foot in good health right now!
Oh, and in case you haven’t heard, crutches are freaking dangerous. Must keep your wits about you while using them for sure.
I am a more than mildly claustrophobic person and I had a few bad moments last night while going in and out of sleep where I started feeling a little panic because I could not move my leg and foot. I had to take some deep breaths and try to find my happy place to make that feeling go away.
Yikes. I didn’t expect this kind of problem!
The good news is I’m not in any real pain, just a little if I have my leg down too long and my ankle swells and jams up against the cast. It goes away if I elevate it for a while.
Probably the worst thing is all this sitting around. I didn’t realize what a jack rabbit I am normally. I usually am jumping up and running around to do this or that because I just don’t ‘sit still’ under normal circumstances.
I’m a wiggle worm of the first water. Well, let me tell you, wiggles are MUCH harder to pull off now.
My psyche is trying to soothe itself by giving me therapeutic dreams though.
Last night I dreamed I was walking through fields of wheat and alfalfa along a creek accompanied by two elderly people I know in real life. We went for a swim in the creek, climbed out of the water on a wooden ladder and hiked along in the tall green waving wheat. [There are no ticks in dreams. It's a RULE.]
The reason I got into the water? [and I promise you I’m telling the truth here] I saw a red hen walking along under the water and decided I would go fetch her.
Dreams.
Freaky.
But in my dreams, I’m gloriously mobile on land and sea, in spite of the really real reality of the can’t get out of it for love nor money purple cast in really real life.
Speaking of which, I am knitting myself a bootie to slip over my chilly toes using a bunch of leftover scrap yarn. It is pretty wild looking, and I’m almost finished with it. I can’t decide what, if anything to put on the toe part. A pom pom? A stuffed animal? A dog biscuit? Hey! I have some big buttons. Maybe I’ll use one of those...
I tried to stay busy yesterday. I made some marinara from scratch and cooked some pasta to go with it. I steamed a pot full of broccoli and then my brussels sprouts, so I have plenty of food to warm up for dinners and lunches. Though I was worn out at the end of the day. I went to bed at 8:30!
If I could get out the door easier in this wheel chair and was able to wheel my way up the incline of our driveway, I would take the dogs for a walk. Maybe they could pull me? MUSH!
It’s on my agenda for the weekend though. With Hub Man to assist, we could put some milage on this wheelchair. [Thank you again D and D for the loan of it!]
Got a call from the orthopedic office with an appointment three weeks hence to get the cast off and an x-ray. Then, if they are happy with my photo shoot, I understand I’ll get a brace and hopefully start physical therapy. The doctor told me from break to fully healed is about three months. ... let that bit of news sink in. OY.
I told her I would do everything I was told exactly as directed, because I want my ankle back!
I need it to be able to fetch scuba diving red hens you see....

Just for the record,
no self respecting Red Hen goes scuba diving.
Snap out of it Cinnamon Roll and
get back to your knitting.
Yes, your royal downy butt!
I heard that.
