Vandals
Sun Jan 01 2012

Yesterday, just as the sun was going down, I decided to take my bike down to the creek real quick and see if I could spot our Mr. Beaver.

I was greeted to a nasty sight.

I’m pretty sure it was ‘the powers that be’ who did this because there is a red flag by his house. God only knows what that means...

Sorry for the poor quality picture, My camera has problems in low light...

Notice where the water mark is. And now I see he had a perfectly good working entrance that didn’t show at all when the water was at the right level.

Here’s the lower pond and you can see where they removed a section of the dam on the right:

I was so distressed and angry. I just don’t see what the big deal is to leave him alone. That creek is not on some well traveled walking path nor is it in anyone’s back yard, exactly.

I don’t know if the beaver is still there or if they trapped him or what. If he still IS there, then this is just harassment.

‘/’ Grrrrr....

On the way back up to the road, an owl flew to the top of a tree. I could feel he also disapproved of recent actions against Mr. Beaver. We looked at each other for a while. But agreed there wasn’t much we could do.

I would have liked to have been present while all this was going on. I might have had a few pithy things to say.

(It’s probably better for all concerned that you missed the whole thing. I don’t want to have to bail you out of jail for being a cranky naturalist on the rampage. It would be MOST embarrassing.)

Your psychological well being is not really a priority for me right now.

I was just hoping to see the beaver in person.

Maybe I still can, if he hasn’t been deported.

This is not an auspicious beginning to 2012.

That’s all I’m sayin’.

I don't know the layout of the area you walk in, but I do know that locally a beaver was able to flood acres of land with his well constructed damn. It changed the course of the stream he built in, flooded a corn field half-a-mile upstream and submerged a section of a natural gas pipeline. They humanely trapped and relocated the beaver, but some of the damage is permanent because the stream changed course. I hope you get to meet Mr. Beaver, and if he can't live there I hope he gets moved to a more appropriate venue.

That's just the thing, the creek drops elevation pretty quickly in this area and resides in a deep area. No fields, no cattle, no crops, no utilities. It's just dumb. IMHO. But I don't KNOW what they have actually done, if anything, to him. I shouldn't get so riled up, not knowing all the facts.

    But I do.

    It's an outrage!
    Pure and simple.

I was afraid of something like this when I read about the excavation from before. I, too, hope Mr. and/or Mrs. Beaver are alright. I hope you are able to find out what has happened and why.
