First Morel
Mon May 14 2012

We went up to the morel patch again today and it was my goal to find one all on my own. After about 10 minutes of searching, I did. Woo Hoo! It was a big one. That's probably why I managed it. The last trip, most of them were just peeking up out of the soil and duff. G. spotted this next one, I got to harvest it. And here's our haul for the morning… ready to cook. It's good to see so many different ones to see the variations in their shape and color. In the mushroom book it says that morels like to grow in areas favored by Calypso Orchids. I think the book was right, because there they were, right in the neighborhood... We also gathered a few bracken fern fiddleheads and brought them home. After reading up about them being bad for you raw, I boiled up a little handful to taste. Eh, not too exciting. And evidently eating a lot of them isn't good for you. I think I'll pass on them from now on. But it's still good to know. (Are you going native? It's starting to worry me.) You worry WAY too much. Stay around, we're having morels for dinner... (I think I have a previous engagement, thanks anyway.) Suit yourself. More Morels for me!

thinking you should start thinking about dyeing .... with mushroom stuff, you know! I've just had some bad stomach issues related to my mold (nose) allergy -- so some foods are going to be off limits until I can tolerate things again. Mushrooms are one of them -- nothing fermented/natural fungi/moldy stinky cheese and all that, and worst of all: NO SOURDOUGH. Oh my. But the stomach pains are NOT worth cheating, I can tell you.

I've never met anyone I trusted enough to go mushroom hunting with. We get beautiful puffball mushrooms in these parts, which are easily identifiable, but I've never actually had the guts to harvest any. Since Kennett Square (self-proclaimed mushroom capital of the world) is so close to me, I never want for cheap mushrooms in the stores!
