First Fawn
Mon Jun 11 2012

We are now on alert status around here. The dogs have had the run of the place up until now and relish their animal feeding routines, morning and evening. But we have a situation. The fawns are arriving, and I hear that mother deer take a dim view of dogs messing around with their babies. Sunny and Ben are going to be very confused about being banned from the chicken house side of the yard for the time being. They think it's their JOB to patrol the place. And they don't complain about overtime either. Anyway, here's the first fawn of the season in the front yard. We saw another doe in the field right behind this picture, who looked like she was ready to pop. We are guessing she is carrying twins. It's going to get really crowded around here I'm thinking. S. tells me not to get too attached to the fawns, because bad things happen all the time with the babies. Mothers die, fawns are killed by other does, dogs go to the vet with injuries after run ins with the mothers. It's a zoo out there. I wish they would stay up in the woods where they belong. Especially now. We can only hope to keep everyone separated as best we can. But there are no guarantees about these things when you live with wild animals in your front yard...

They are beautiful creatures, but we are not fans around here because they do so much damage. Between the deer and slugs we are on full time duty trying to keep the yard pretty. Evidently neither species has any concept of the work that goes into preparing for a wedding. [sigh]

You do have a problem ! It seems to me that the town Deer are on the rise as the mountain Lions are out of control. Dogs, cats ,Deer are on the list for snacks. A L:ion has a 20 mile range and push to keep out all others.

We hear the same thing here about does with fawns. I'm careful to keep Trace away from them anytime. Hoping for the best!

Even in less rural settings we have major problems with deer/fawns this time of year. There are plenty of things you can try to keep them out of your front yard (you can purchase predator urine and mark your yard with it; the odor will make the deer shy of the area. It isn't cheap, and you need to reapply it, but it works. Of course, then you don't get to see the little ones up close and personal.

This reminds me of our last few years in SM. The deers came down from the hilsl to get water which they had never been in the neighborhoods for the other 28 years I lived there. We had a mama and her little ones living in our yard. I didn;t eed to trim my hedges in the back for quite a while. :-)
