The deer have had a good summer.
They have put on a lot of weight in preparation for winter.
And for some odd reason, their coloring has been altered too.
I don't know exactly how this is going to benefit them, but there you have it.
Here they are in their usual haunt, just outside my window.
Okay, okay, those aren't deer.
They are cattle that are on their way out of the mountain pastures.
They find their way back [eventually] to their home farm.
But on the way, they tend to take a few detours. These fine specimens walked down the lane to our front yard.
I think they heard the grazing was particularly choice.
They only stayed a short while though thank goodness.
Here's another photo of a different group going home several days earlier.
My sister-in-law and I were on our morning walk when we were asked to stand off the road so the cattle would keep moving in the direction their owners wanted them to. So we got out of the way and watched them mosey along.
It's a good thing they got back down here in the valley. It's snowing right here by us this morning. I hear there's a foot and a half up on the mountain already. Winter is arriving quickly this year. Just a little over a week ago, it was short sleeve weather. We all are a little whiplashed.
But S. and I dug all the potatoes from the garden yesterday and they are safe in the pump house, along with the winter squash. I've already baked a few of the butternuts and have plans for soup today.
I hope that will keep us warm … on the insides anyway.
I really mean it about the snow...
