Contrary to what appears on the pages of this blog, I actually DO other things than chase chickens around trying to get their portraits.
Really I do.
But I must admit, having a chick nursery, even with a capable mother hen is a time consuming project.
Yesterday I reached my limit of chick fuss, and took apart the nursery. Lydia and the brood slept in the big coop with the big girls last night. Not on the roost of course, but in a nesting box of Lydia's choosing. I TRIED to get her to take a spot in the corner, but she would have none of it.
Here they are on their last night in the crate. I took this a few days ago.
As you see, Lydia too is working on her new outfit.
It was pretty cozy and private.
The chicks are three weeks old now...
They pretty much eat all day long.
Yeah. That's about it.
In the meantime, Miss Jane is finally fully feathered out and is the most regal and stunning hen EVER!
Now that I sort of have things a bit back to normal out there, I have turned my attention to canning. Today I'm pressure canning 6 quarts of pinto beans. They will come in handy for quick dinners on the dark days of winter. Mr. P says he has extra tomatoes in his garden and that I can have them if I want. So tomatoes will be next. I might even try my hand at some tomato sauce. I've never made it.
I'm trying to get my hands on some apples. It is impossible to contemplate heading into winter without apple butter on my pantry shelves.
I wonder if chickens like apple peels?
