On most Tuesdays, S comes over after she gets home from work and I feed her.
It's a lovely arrangement.
I actually cook a real meal, and she and I both get to sit down like civilized people and eat at the table like grown ups.
Living alone has its hazards. And letting meals devolve into afterthoughts is one of them.
So at least once during the week, we both eat well.
Tonight I made a big pan of roasted vegetables. Red potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, parsnips, carrots and butternut squash.
But sitting over on the bread table where she couldn't see it, was dessert.
The Orange Thing was totally unaware that it was on the menu.
I finally pointed it out to her and she said, "What is that? A gourd?" Which is a logical guess for her, because she has grown hundreds of gourds in her garden over the years.
So I launched into my Sumo tale and she got all the details in person.
Then we opened it up and were about to start eating, and I remembered I really should show you the inside of it, after all that nonsense yesterday.
I am still not entirely sure how to use my new camera, but I'm beginning not to care. As long as it keeps producing these kinds of photos, I'm willing to remain somewhat ignorant. A little mystery in life never hurt anyone....
The decapitated Sumo.
The juicy cells in this fruit are enormous. And there is no hint of sour or bitter. We both remarked on it.
It's a marvel.
I cannot take much credit for these photos, as astonishing as they are. The camera just kept doing its thing. I was just trying to keep up. After years of being a very competent photographer, it feels pretty embarrassing to have a camera that's smarter than me. He lets me push some buttons, that's about it.
Anyway, this fruit is so large, we couldn't eat it all. I put the remainder in the fridge.
I'm feeling better about my purchase. It fed me and a guest for one meal, and I'll have it again tomorrow. That's pretty impressive for one orange.
If you ever see one in a store near you, do not hesitate to get one.
(You are pretty free with other people's money there Cupcake.)
And you are pretty free with your unsolicited comments.
(It's my job. And I take it seriously.)
I've noticed.
Boy, have I noticed.
