Today is the official harvest day at the end of the growing season.
Except for the potatoes and carrots which are safe underground, I picked virtually everything in the garden that was ripe or near ripe, because the weather people say we may be having a frost in a few days.
I found a bit more than I thought I would...
The tomatoes will get roasted and frozen for soups and sauces, the peppers will be roasted too and frozen. Those overgrown lemon cucumbers are being consumed by the hens right now. The basil ... before lunchtime today will have been transformed into pesto. And that one lone crookneck looks like lunch to me!
Note to self: One lemon cucumber plant in the garden is QUITE enough. Four is WAY too many!
If we DO get a frost, I'm going to really miss these...
I've been picking them regularly, and the plants have MANY side shoots now that will turn into flowers... if they have time. But zinnias are quite sensitive to cold, so I'm worried.
There are still miniature pumpkins growing. I don't want to pick them until we DO have a frost. They need to harden off if they are to keep well.
There's also a chance of rain on Sunday. I truly hope that turns out to be true. Everything, everywhere could use a good drink of water.
It's been a good year in the garden. My faith in gardening has been restored and I already have plans for next year. Big plans.
(All gardeners should be given a middle name. . . Pollyanna.)
I LIKE that name! It's PRETTY!
Time to get in the kitchen and deal with those tomatoes.
Waste not want not... that's what I have to say about it.
Step away from that infernal computer and get your apron on missy.
So much for taking a moment to mark the occasion. She has no sense of the dramatic or emotional.
I heard that.
I have to go now.
