This morning I awoke to the coolest morning we have had in a long time. It was nice to have a break from the usual ... "What time is it? And why do I want to turn on the air conditioner?"
I decided it would be a good morning to have a small celebration out in the chicken run.
I have had three hens go broody this year. Lydia of course, who is now laying again. Then Little Miss went all 'tick in the nest box' on me. She finally snapped out of it. Then Goldie decided someone needed to fill the broody slot for July and I found her firmly glued to the nest under the roost a few days later.
Sigh.
Anyway, the celebration was the cutting of the zip tie on the wheat field. I didn't want Goldie to miss out, so after I let the rest of the flock into the wheat, I went back into the coop and fetched Goldie, who was very vocal in her opinion of my executive decision.
There's something very farmy girly satisfying about walking through your chicken yard in your nightgown and summer housecoat while the sun is just coming up, with a disgruntled hen tucked under your arm.
I'm just sayin'.
They hardly knew where to start... Goldie forgot all about her commitment to broody for a while.
Jill gets a little nervous in the enclosed area of the wheat field and I found her on the other side of the fencing gathering her courage to go in and partake of the harvest.
She was loitering in the introvert's area under the Butterfly bush.
And who could blame her?
They are very picturesque right now.
It didn't take Goldie long to run back to the coop and sit on her imaginary eggs however.
My girls have VERY good imaginations in that department.
More's the pity.
