My, My, Buttermilk Pie
Tue Jan 02 2018

The verdict: Make it now. I don't think you will be sorry. DSC04277   I did not make the cornmeal crust. That's a bridge too far in my world. Just use your own favorite pie crust. And I made just a couple of changes.
  1. I used at least a teaspoon of lemon zest.
  2. I added a pinch of salt to the filling,
  3. I did not make the meringue topping.
  4. It took a little longer to bake than the directions called for. Just bake it till it's no longer liquidy in the middle.
It's gonna 'jiggle', but it shouldn't be liquid. This recipe is from the 'Farm Journal Pie Cookbook'. One of my most treasured and reliable cookbooks EVER. Let me know if you give it a try. My work here is done. :-)   (Oh Gawd. I AM in a foodie blog. All is lost. Somebody please help me.)   lime-wild

Looks interesting. Pies in the American sense aren't really a thing here (if you say pie, most people will think of a meat-filled savoury), so I have no idea whether it's possible to even get pre-made pie shells, and I think I've only seen buttermilk in the supermarket once, but if I manage to track those things down, I might give it a try.

Even tarts aren't all that common here, really. We're more of a cake society than a pie one :-) I've never had a buttermilk pancake (I know, this is indeed a crisis situation) - they're normally just made with ordinary milk here. And the only buttermilk biscuit I've had was in America - we don't have biscuits here at all (well, we do, but what we call a biscuit is what you'd call a cookie) - the closest we have are scones, which are similar but totally different (and as far as I know, never made with buttermilk). I can see I'm definitely going to have to track down some buttermilk.

Oh my my my.... I need to make you a nice homemade apple pie then. You'll never get over it. Or blackberry.... now there's a pie to make you make you swoon! I wonder how long it would take it to arrive in New Zealand? And in my family, pie crust from scratch is the norm. Though many people use store bought.
