“Ok, lets do it” – I said after spending last few days in a heavy preparational mode. After finally feeling brave enough to venture into unknown. After being encouraged by the wisdom “the sooner you’d get on with it, the quicker it will be over”. So I said “let’s do it. Let’s do it today”.
“OK. But you’ve got to treat me with special care or I will leave your house in a mess.”
“I know, you can. I promise, I’ll be careful”
“Say that you agree that you will be solely responsible if anything go wrong. Or I won’t do it with you”
“OK. I don’t have a choice, do I? I agree”
“Now give me nice figure, around 25 digits, I’d say – you know, those licenses ain’t free”
“I certainly know the price”
“Well, click OK and let’s get on with it then”... and I’ve heard the sound of a hard spinning…
After ten minutes…
“errrr…you know, I don’t feel like it, to be honest. We’re not compatible, it seems. Do you want to retry or quit?”
“bummer! I want to retry, it’s too soon to be the end of it”
“ok, as you wish” [~shrugs and spins away again]
“Nope. Still not up to it. No way we are compatible. Do you wanna try again? Or let’s just cancel”
Thoughts in my mind: if I cancel everything now, I will still need to overcome my fear and do it some other time anyway. Might as well just try to convince to carry on. “I wanna retry, please”
“Sure, if you’ve got all the time of your life…” stupid compatibility kicked me out again.
“oh well, guess, I haven’t got a choice then” ... I cancelled…and oh, wonder! – she changed her mind! (maybe she just wanted to tease me first?) for the next half-hour I was happy. Really happy, you know...until the next stop. Where the game repeated.
“I can’t”
“oh, please, retry”
“yes, but I still can’t”
“not even if I ask you nicely?”
“you asked me, but I still can not. Make up your mind already: do you want to quit, or to continue? *But I’m not responsible for anything!”
“OK, I’ve got little to loose. Let’s continue, shall we?”
And it was only after this second miracle, when I finally realised: Microsoft has been invented by…woman! Who else would do such things: when in error - refuses to retry but when you’ve given up and quitting, suddenly changes her mind and carries on as ever. Who else would threaten you with the total system failure and then just do what’s needed without warnings. You’ll tell her “cancel” and she’ll do it anyway…
So today I’ve learned two things: that Microsoft software is mean and capricious like women. And like with women, if you’re assertive enough and won’t give up on the first error, eventually, you’ll get what you wanted. In my case it was a new Exchange mail server.
