It was a boring day of weekend. I’ve been working hard at the computer for the whole day and by the evening felt so tired that dreamed of Monday. Being The Goddess of Law and Order (well, not really, but at least – The Janitor Of My File System) I’ve decided today is a good day to get them all cleaned, sorted and backed up (always a good idea for any computer-aware human being)
Actually, that is not true…or it is half-true. It’s all started from e-mail I’ve received from my childhood friend. We haven’t spoke for at least 15(?!) years. So here she was – lost&found and I was faced with the hard task of how to squeeze somewhat 15 years of my life into a collection of binaries of electronic message. It looked as if a simple task, easily done – I’ll just burn all my tales and accompanied pictures into DVD and send it to my friend(I’ve discovered that apparently my life would never fit on CD).
So far, so good – no relation to the need to sort out my computer…or so it seems. As I gather together most of my latest newsflashes, travels and else, I realised that I’m "missing" about 10 years of my life, which were, actually, quite exiting and deserved to be shared. So that’s what happened next:
I went in search of the files with old stories. I’ve got plenty of those, dated back to 1998, with my first impressions of The Island right after we moved here – I have to say they are – HILARIOUS and so naïve! How do I know? Well, you know how things usually happen: first you look for something...then you proceed to read it to see if it is interesting enough to be shared...then you want to edit it slightly in terms of grammar and some irrelevant details…then you want to re-organise your updated collection in a more efficient way, you move your files around, create new folders, rename old ones until you're completely lost in what are you doing and no longer remember the initial noble purpose for the process.
Then you move into next file, read it, edit it slightly and discover that your storage system should be arranged in different order…you move, create and rename again…and after a day of fiddling around with 2GB of information, guess what I ended up with? - I’m burning the CD for my friend with just pictures on it. I’m going to start afresh the sorting&editing, as I’ve decided now I have to outline them differently. I haven’t back them up, as I want to do it after everything sorted. I’ve got a sore corn on my bum from sitting too long at computer desk and a headache from too much of creative concentration…
and the results? – well, the files are still there at least. In their places, I mean. Everything is just as it was. Tsk, tsk, MISSTICK, what a wasted day!
