Intermittent Outages
Thu May 13 2004

This evening (my evening, so from about 6 o'clock GMT) the site will undergo some changes at a low level which may result in intermittent, brief interruptions to service while things settle down. Apologies and I'll try to keep it to a minimum.

DearDiary itself will move to a new IP address and will no longer require HTTP1.1 support (although most browsers support it, it appears some ISPs still don't!). These changes are necessary as part of the new Hamiko Hosting service that was mentioned in previous entries.

I'll let you all know when I am done.

Steve

    Question about the hosting thing.

Would Premium users have access to PERL and PHP, so they can do interactive site things? Likewise - dare I hope - a mySQL database of their own?

While a static site is nice - what would really add value for me is the ability to have scriptinf and mySQL database capabilties.

That's the main reason I host on another site - I need the server-side capabilities.

Also - how will domain names or such be handled? Will we be subdirectories? Sub-domains? Can we have full blown domains?

How will this hosting thing work?

I'm disappointed that it will not be part of the Premium Users package in any way.

I am in the state of shopping for a hosting service. I emailed you recently, however, about not having enough money to become a Premium member.

I have a suggestion that will not end up costing me MORE money, and may get you more subscribers.

How about keeping 'hosting members' and 'premium users' separate, but give 'hosting members' a complementary 'premium users' account while they are hosting members?

I saw the mention of hosting earlier, and it sure does sound like a great idea!

And have you thought about a product line? DD tee-shirts, or bound or looseleaf DD journals? It would be pretty cool if people could order a journal with a cover matching their own page, but that's probably too complicated to do.

I had more income-producing ideas, but can't think of them right now. But. I got several by scoping out some of the other online journal sites.

    Hugs,
    Ani
