War
Fri Jan 10 2003

It is a bit surreal that in a few weeks we may be engaged in war with Iraq. It all seems so disconnected from one’s day to day life. I suppose this is the result of “limited wars”. They do not become all encompassing like the second world war. That war virtually effected everyone in the world in some way or another. But these days, things are different and it makes getting your head around the motives and results a lot more difficult.

Unfortunately, these limited wars end up becoming media ‘events’, something that I really don’t care for. The US media even gives the war a logo and a title and flashes on the screen like it’s a mini series. It’s disgusting. But that is just style. The substance is that our young men and women are in harms way. If we were fighting in the streets of Washington D.C. God forbid, maybe these people would get real.

Now lest you think me a dove, let me disabuse you of this assumption.
I think the “Butcher of Baghdad” needs to go. He has killed thousands of his own people in the most brutal way imaginable. And supported terrorism in America and elsewhere in the world. This is clear. The man is a psychopath. Period. But I guess the thing that gets me in a snit is the media machine and their constant spin of the situation. And we must be honest, in America the media are synonymous with “liberal”. These liberals whine incessantly about proof that he has nuclear weapons. And I have no doubt that if they DO find proof that he has them, those very same people will start saying, “But do we know for sure that he intends to USE them?” It never ends. It wearies the mind to have to listen to such silly rhetoric while evil people become stronger and stronger.

And here is America once again taking up the gauntlet, taking care of business while most of Europe stands aside and shakes their head and criticizes us incessantly. Thank God for Britain, or we would be going it completely alone.

I am afraid too of the consequences to Israel when we finally do start fighting in Iraq. It fills me with dread what Sadaam might try. Let us hope the defenses that Israel has are as good as I have been reading about.

Oh, I am no political expert, but at this point all I know is that if we don’t fight back, no one anywhere in the world will be safe from terrorism. . . no one. I apologize to all those who want things to be COMPLETELY clear cut, before any action is taken. Life is messy. War is hell. But fighting terrorism is messy as hell.

My main comment is to point to your comment about the US going it alone. That will make us the bad guy, and if you think people don't like us now, just wait...
The fact that we're supporting half the world doesn't seem to have gotten thru to that half, and the rest of the world. Seems to me like biting the hand that feeds them.
Yes, Israel is in mighty danger if the US starts with Iraq. It makes sense to believe that Sadaam would retaliate that way. Oh, for the words and wisdom of the Rebbe!!

I agree that Saddam needs to go, and that could have been done years ago. But he does not have to go at the expense of his country and all the many military personnal sent over there. There will be lives lost just for one man!
And other countries have been terrorised but they are not jumping at the opportunity for war. Except our prime minister of course. Though Saddam may have supported terroism he is not the one that committed the act. And there are plenty of terrorist residing in our own country! What about the una-bomer (?spelling)? Going to start a war with his state because he lived there?
As of yet there is no proof that Saddam is going to start a war, and it he his, why doesn't your damn government let us in on the secret? Because there isn't any and he is rely on the unquestioning support of his lap dogs, like Howard (Aust). Too many innocent people will die for this one man. There are other solutions. Look at Africa. The UN organized to remove the oligarchy from power and give the people a say. Well give this to Iraq. Let the people tell Saddam what they want. If they vote him in then it is there choice. If not then there is the power to remove him. But no war.

Sorry that was so long. I will have to write my own entry later aboutit.

Discussing war is a political minefield, sorry, but I won't fall into it. I just hope and pray for those involved in the direct fighting and the leaders to come to some kind of solution.
