Sprouts in Winter
Tue Jan 28 2003

I know it’s only January, but I decided to see if I could get a few things to grow. The way I do that in the winter is to put some seeds in damp paper towels and fold them up in a plastic bag until they sprout. Once they get going, I am hoping that they will continue to grow outside even though it is pretty chilly yet.

In the plastic bag there are seeds for, chard, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, and sweet peas. ( You HAVE to plant some flowers, food for the soul.)
Anyway, we will see if my experiment works. Some of those things I should have planted in the fall, but I was so “over” gardening by then, I just didn’t have the inclination. After yanking up 20 tomato plants, you get a little cranky with the whole business.

This year I bought Brandywine tomato seeds to see how they do. I have seeds left over from last year for Cherokee Purple, and Yugoslavian Pink and Nebraska Wedding (those are orange)… What a sight they will make!
And I recommend to any of you who are gardeners, a tomato called “Silvery Fir Tree”. I buy the seeds from Seed Savers Exchange. They have a web site. Anyway those are nice smallish round tomatoes that bear early and then die. A determinate variety, very nice. They have very ferny, lacey kind of leaves. I liked them a lot and plan to put them in again this year.

Look at this, January is almost over. . . What happened ?
