The Mother Meets Tolkien
Mon Feb 10 2003

Last night we watched the Fellowship of the Ring with the Mother.
She had never seen it. In order to do this, Daniel had to get out all his remote control devices to operate the ridiculously complicated electronic gadgetry in our living room.

About half way through the movie, which he had seen several times, he decided to go play Snood on the computer while we finished the movie.
He gave me the honored responsibility of handling the remotes. He came over and plopped down three of them for me. One for the TV, one for the stereo receiver that controls the speakers and one for the DVD player.
I was overwhelmed with gratitude that he would entrust me with his favorite toys…it was a touching moment.

When the movie was over, it took me 5 minutes to turn everything off and get the cable TV back on. My mother asked, “ How many of those things do you have anyway ? “ “WELL, I said, we have SIX of them.” SIX ? . . .

Six.

One for the TV (and you NEED that one so you can put the TV on INPUT to get it to play DVD’s. One for the Cable box, that also runs the TV and the VCR if the planets are aligned properly. One for the CD player. If I want to listen to Barry, I have to have that one. One for the VCR. One for the stereo receiver. And one for the DVD player. And a partridge in a pear tree.

This is clearly ridiculous.

Especially when I realized after making this list, that I DON”T have a remote control device that will do ANYTHING to control my husband.
I TRY pushing the buttons while pointing them at him, but nothing ever happens that I can tell. Although come to think of it, when I do that, it might be sending him an infrared signal to go out and buy another remote.
I think I am going to stop doing that from now on.

Anyway, after seeing the movie, my mother concludes that Orcs are not to be trusted, and besides that, they all need a good bath. Tolkien would be so proud…

Ahh Yetzirah how I missed you.. I was laughing with tears in my eyes as I read your entries with your mother she sounds great! Thank you for the kind comments about the poem. If you find a remote that controls men, I want one! Did you know that you can get a remote that can operate everything? I think it must have a teeny weeny man inside it...

Boy! you sure don't believe in easing into something! First your mother gets introduced to an ORTHODOX synagogue, and then (how many did you say?) 6 different remote controls just to watch a movie. And a fantasy movie besides. Tch.

Wouldn't surprise me if she didn't visit again any time within the next five years. However, her comment about the Orcs seems typically mother.

I haven't seen that movie, and if I do, all I need is one remote control. Which is used mostly for on and off.

Say Hi to Mom. I enjoyed meeting her.

    Shalom
