Identity Crisis
Tue Mar 04 2003

All right, I need clarification here people.

We here at DearDiary, are we Bloggers ?

Or are we “online journalists” ?

“On line diarists” ?

On line obsessive/compulsives ?

Just plain obsessive ?

I was just wondering.

I will tell you a secret. I first tried to get an account set up on “Blogger.com” but did NOT like their interface at all. I ended up posting about 3 times just to try a test message, and get it right. Then I found DD and was SO happy to see that it was easy to use and so of course stayed here. But the reason I even started looking into the whole on line writing business was an article I read about “Blogging”. So I am having this identity crisis here.
( It's a bit late for that don't you think? ) Well, maybe....

When I tell people about my writing, sometimes I ask them, “Have you ever heard of Blogging?” and other times I tell them that I keep an on line diary. Both comments frequently get incredulous stares, especially from the really private types who could not imagine posting anything remotely intimate on the internet….. Pause for thought here, they COULD be right about this….hmmmm

Nah, heck with that, let’s chat !

Anyway, what do YOU say when you tell people about what you do here ?

Are you a Blogger, or a Diarist, or a Journalist, or an Obsessive/Compulsive/Exibitionist/Writer type person?

Or, ( fill in the blank )

I gotta know !

Someone here said recently they had a "journal" because "diaries" are for kids. Sometimes I think I am obsessive because I am addicted to this . . . I simply do not want to give it up after more than a couple of years. I love this site so much because of the way it is laid out and the way you can personalize it. I personally call myself a "diarist".

I think I'm "none of the above." But you're the one who put me up to this, you know.

I've been trying to figure it out myself.

    Diarist? well, trying.
    Wrter? no way.
Obsessive/compulsive? Hah, don't have enough energy for that.

Since I've been giving some thought to that very question, give me a few minutes, while I go to my diary and try to figure it out.

A weblog is generally made up of several short entries on one page logging (or web logging, i.e. blogging) snippets and snatches from the Internet and/or daily life. Life and the Internet abbreviated as it were. Yes, you are a journaller and a very good one from what I've seen so far. And all of the online journallers have egos. Huge, lovely, fluffy egos. Why else would we possibly think strangers would be interested in reading about -our- lives? ;) By the way, I found you via the Diary Critic.

I tell people I keep an online diary or journal, I alternate between the words. But most I tell are already writers, so they don't really react. It doesn't seem strange to them at all. Maybe that's saying something about all writers. ;-)

As I have searched the web for diary sites, (no I do not write one, and I am a friend who reads this one and now finds herself searching diary sites to try and learn more about them), I read someone out there who used the term escribitionists. I thought you would enjoy this one...........
