Planting Seeds
Mon Mar 03 2003

It’s the Pragmatist’s fault.

She bragged about our weather. So now it looks like it is going to rain. And I WAS going to plant seeds out in the raised beds today ! Instead I have had to content myself with starting seeds indoors. Five kinds of tomatoes: Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Nebraska Wedding and Silvery Fir Tree, all heirloom varieties.

I also started some seed for Strawflowers, Asters, Sweet Peas, and 4 o’clocks.
And this year I made little signs on toothpicks for each tomato plant because last year I got them all mixed up and didn’t know which variety was which until the tomatoes were ripe and I checked the seed catalog pictures. Some organized gardener I am !

I am very thankful today to be able to do quiet domestic things. Recent events weigh heavy on my mind. I don’t think there is any remedy for them but time. . .

    Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa!

Well, even tho you had to start the seeds indoors instead of the outdoors, at least you got started.

I tried starting a tomato plant in a large, deep planter. Didn't work very well because the plant couldn't get enough sun. The owner of the apartments objected to my putting the planter anywhere other than my patio, which is covered, and gets some afternoon sun. Not enough for a tomato plant to thrive.

So, I buy my tomatoes from the markets. :sigh:

Gardening is good for the soul. Let it help heal.

    Shalom.

Gardening is such a wonderful thing. It is a miracle even, keeping us focused on the simplicity and joy of life. *smile*

I wish you well as you grieve your loss. I know it is a time of sadness. Take care.

Grieving a loss and planting a garden . . . somehow they seem so right together. All part of God's plan for us.

Oh my gosh! Cherokee Purples again this year? YES!! From your friend and neighbor, I do hope you have enough to share again! :-) I couldn't get enough of these last year. Truthfully, these tomatoes have such a fabulous and unique flavor, I even made tomato sandwiches with them! She is a master gardener, even without the degree!Trust me on this one!
