April Fooled
Thu Apr 03 2003

My friend C. invited me to go with her to drive up in the mountains to see a place called “Daffodil Hill” today. When we started out we had lovely weather. Great puffy clouds and lots of sun. But as we got nearer the mountains things started to look a little different. Soon it was raining off and on and then hailing, then I looked out the window and said ,”Oh, look, it snowed here last night!” As I saw a few patches of snow here and there. I was wrong, it had snowed there a few MINUTES ago, because after turning a few more corners it was snowing in on us in earnest! It’s the second of April for heavens sake! We were not psychologically PREPARED for snow, and we didn’t have our mittens either. We kept driving, sure that we were lost and finally stopped to ask directions. Turns out we were only one mile away from our destination.

Our destination was “closed due to the weather”. We DID see a handful of daffodils covered with wet snow at the entrance by the LOCKED GATE…. So we drove home and ate our packed lunches here at my house instead of a picnic table at Daffodil Hill. It was a nice drive though, and when we stopped once I got to have a nice mouthful of fresh snow, one of my favorite things. I never thought when I left the house this morning that I would be chomping down a handful of snow an hour later. It’s amazing what a little change of elevation on a Spring day of uncertain weather can cook up on short notice.

But we got out of the house for a while. This is a good thing. And we had a nice visit. This is good too. But no way did we get to see much of the famous “Daffodil Hill”. It will remain that mythical place people are always telling me I should go see sometime. I wonder if the daffodils will still be blooming in July ?

No ?

Well, I bet there won’t be any SNOW in July.

Think positively not many people will be able to say they've seen Daffodil Hill in the snow. I hope the next picnic goes better, I wouldn't be too sure about July in Scotland at least it's capable of snow in all seasons!

Such a shame the gates were closed. What a beautiful picture -- daffodils covered in snow!
