For The Pragmatist
Sun Nov 09 2003

As a little surpise for Pragmatist who REALLY wanted to see the aurora the other night from the big solar flare.... (me too!) I found these pictures on the internet from the Fairbanks Alaska site I go to all the time.
I am also putting these on here to console myself that we are missing the lunar eclipse too because it is cloudy here (boo hoo!) All the good astronomical events are passing us by! But thanks to some kind soul, we get to see a little of what it was like for them anyway. It is still on my list of "Things To Do In This Lifetime"

Thing #27: See the Northern Lights in person, preferably with LOTS of warm clothes on and a thermos of hot chocolate.

(Notice the little dipper in the first one?)

Responsible. That word's been following me around all my life too.

Thanks again for your encouragement. I think the best thing for me to do tonight is to stop trying to force myself to write. So I'll be a little behind -- I'll catch up. (I hope!)

Anyway, I think it's time for a hot bath, a good book, some music, maybe another beer. I love my story, but I think I just need to forget it for awhile so I can look at it with a fresh eye tomorrow.

Keep me posted on how things are going for you. Enjoy your night.

    Wow, lovely photos.

*but I wouldn't have been able to get there without writing 49,750 words that fall short.*

This is so true. I don't remember who said it, but apparently we've got to write about a million words of pure junk before we even begin to get to the good stuff. I didn't say that to discourage you, but to encourage you. Keep writing. *That's* what it's all about.

*(I looked and we are one the same PAGE on the NaNo site!!!)*

Oh, really. I'll have to take a look. Can you email me your user name for NaNo, please?

Whoah, those are impressive! I wish I could have seen those in real life.

Where I grew up in Edmonton there are some impressive northern lights. We went camping there a few years ago, and it had been so long since I'd been there that I forgot about them. So when I saw these multicolored curtains just hanging in the sky I asked Mrs. Teabags, "What in tarnation are those???" She knew what they were right away. I can't believe I forgot!

I managed to catch the lunar eclipse, just as we were leaving the supermarket. I didn't know there was going to be a lunar eclipse, and assumed it was was just one of the phases of the moon. Which confused me because I could have sworn it was pretty full only yesterday.

Talk to you later, and have a great Sunday.

Wow those pictures are beautiful, if it's any consolation in Britain we never get to see any amazing astronomical events because of rain and inclement weather either.

    Thanks for sharing it

THANK YOU SO MUCH for these pictures! I have always wanted to see the aurora, and have never been far enough north. I can only imagine how overwhelming a sight they are "in person". I understand the lights are accompanied by a crakling sound. Imagine how early peoples might have stood in awe and fear of such a sight.
