December Surprise
Sun Dec 12 2004

I went out into the garden on this dreary cloudy chilly winter's day, and look what I found hiding under the grass clipping mulch :

A second crop of potatoes. They grew from the handful that I missed in the first harvest in late summer. I am not used to such a long growing season, so I'm still kind of baffled by the whole thing. But not baffled enough that I don't know what to do. I will be making potato soup today. The perfect food for a dark winter day. We even have a nice homemade Russian Rye bread to eat with it. Two most excellent peasant foods.

In other news, I just finished crocheting a scarf for the mother. I found some of that Chenille yarn by Lion Brand. It is a beautiful royal blue. But it was like crocheting catapillars. The stuff is huge and furry. Makes up into a very warm scarf though. It will do its job well.

Okay, gotta go make soup.

Those look WONDERFUL! Now I'm hungry for 'taters. I'll have to go hunt through my cupboards to see if I have any!

What a great find! I just have to ask though, do the blue potatoes make the soup an odd color? I know that mashed blue potatoes are a very strange color. Also, my favorite bread with potato-leek soup is cheddar-chive biscuits. :-P

Mmmmm. Potato soup. I haven't made any in ages! Well, I don't have any surprises in my garden, so I guess I'll have to go to the store and get some taters.

Fine project for a gloomy Sunday afternoon.
