Yesterday we went for a stroll into the fields near our house. It felt good to get out and clear out the cobwebs in my head and be in the fresh air. We are surrounded by the wide open fields of a regional park that is more like a preserve it is so large. There are vernal pools in the spring that everyone makes a big fuss over because there are these little fairy shrimp that live in them. But I guess I shouldn't complain because it keeps people from building on every square inch of property out here.
I tried coming over to see this one area of the park that a neighbor told me about, but there were so many voles running in the tall dead grasses and across the gravel road that I got a bit creeped out, and I'm not that squeamish about rodents. [My mother would have taken some kind of spell had she been with me]. Anyway, that was a few weeks ago, and now, they seem to have gone underground for the winter, or else been decimated by the local owl and hawk population. Of which we have a substantial number with such an abundant source of food!
So without further ado, a couple of pictures for you. . .

I could not identify the red tree, but Hub Man promptly voiced his opinion that it is some sort of walnut tree. In any case it was stunning in the afternoon sun don't you think?
