Sunny Meets Jack
Thu Jan 12 2006

I'm outta breath!

Sunny and I went for a little foray down to the creek this morning.

I let her off the leash and she went merrily along staying nearby, nose to the ground. It was because of that habit that she did not notice the four cock pheasants that flushed out of a bush 50 yards ahead of us. They stayed out of her sight going from bush to bush until they ended up on the other side of the creek, out of reach.

We followed the creek around a bend and out into some really open areas away from the houses and as we were heading back... there was this jack rabbit.....

Well, off they went, Sunny disappeared over the rise headed back toward the houses and the (ack!) streets. Oy. I thought, well, live and learn, I guess I can't trust her off leash, and that's a pity because she sure enjoys it. So I trudged up the rise in the direction she had run. (Boy can she run!) Mulling over strategies to retrieve her, and hoping the rabbit would find a hiding place. But after a few minutes, here came Sunny, following her trail right back to me. I was MOST impressed. She got big hugs and was put back on her leash pronto.

I give her a gold star for the day.

I don't know if the Jack Rabbit would be quite so generous. He's probably still catching his breath.

We had a scare ourselves with Shelby in Astoria, she got away from #1 and shot across the busy street and behind the Motel towards the beach. #1 & #2 got their workout while I moved the van closer to where she had run to!
Glad to hear Sunny came back on her own, I'm not sure Shelby would have!

What an adventure. Probably not one Jack would care to repeat.

Sunny's a good girl. She must have had some pretty good training before you found each other. But, it was kinda scary when she took off like that.

Pheasants are cagey. Rabbits are fast. Good for them!

Sunny will do fine off leash!! Some dogs have a a very good tracking nose. I once watched Brandy a Fox Terrier over best part of a mile pick up by boot track as I sat on a rock bluff Deer hunting and glassing for deer. She followed my foot print exactly and knew who had made it.
My friends brother had taken her hunting miles away from where I was hunting, Brandy did not like him and was headed home when she cut my track. Jumped in my lap and drank half my canteen of water and hunted with me for a couple
hours and back tracked to the pickup and jumped in front seat and fell asleep till I got her back to owners house. They will back track thier own track also. If you lose a dog many a time while hunting If you leave a shirt or any clothing they will be sleeping on it hours later on your return to check on your buddie.

Well, she's a good dog who can't resist chasing those little critters. Imagining Sunny bolting made me laugh. ;-)
