Sometimes, color is distracting. I thought it was with this rose from my front yard. So I made it into a black and white photo and found it appealed to me much more this way.

Beautiful, but what color is it when not submitted in black & white?
That reminds me, I wanted to buy more roses for my yard this year. I love the peachy colored ones, so I'll seek those out!

If you want to show shapes and shadings, black and white does that very nicely. But if you want the soul of the rose, color is necessary. All depends on your reason for taking the picture.

I love black & white photography. I think it shows so much more than color. Especially when taking them of people.

I agree with Pragmatist...except when photographing people.
B&W shots of people show just as much depth and soul if not more than colour ones.
But with things like still life, I think her comment is spot on :o)
You should post a colour pic of the rose too, so we can all compare ;o)

The essence of the rose revealed....,but have you ever tasted one? There is a little resruarant in Silverton that serves an English style tea. Among the assorted goodies is a raspberry jam infused with roses. The senses of taste and smell intertwine and become indistinguishable from one another; the essence if bliss. :)
