I have been wandering around my house lately, trying to find ways to make it more user friendly. We have moved furniture three times in the living room in the last couple of months, and I am mentally shuffling things around here in the computer room. I only do that mentally mind you because if I ever DO decide to move things, that would include this computer desk which is an old government surplus desk with a side piece that has a cabinet at the end of it... so it is an L shaped monster of enormous bulk and equally enormous weight. We don't move it anywhere without good reason.

Maybe it is the change of season. Knowing that I will be indoors more than usual and will have to look at this stuff up close and personal day in and day out. Maybe it is just plain restlessness. But I do know that I could use a change of perspective.

You know how things sort of disappear when you have had them in the same place for a long time? That's what has happened in here. This is supposed to be my creative place. But it is just a room with furniture lined up all around the perimeter. Too much furniture I am thinking.

A friend of mine was telling me the other day that she wanted to do some major scaling down of her possessions. She said that she felt like a lot of the things she had 'owned' a piece of her. They were calling to her. Like books on how to do upholstery, or books on decorating. Or leftover supplies bought for a project that is now complete. Too many chotches that were important at one time but now they are looking much more like clutter. She wants to divest herself of these burdensome things, so she can think in new directions.

I think she is onto something.

You know, the Salvation Army store is only a few miles from here.....

They have this nice man at the back entrance who will gladly accept almost anything you might like to give him.

I think I might have to pay him a visit.

I think they call it "simplifying your life." I've done it with the move and it feels great. Now I just need to get some furniture to move around. Places to sit would be nice. :o)

How are you going to get that L-shaped monstrosity in the back of your car?

Oh, wait. That's not Salvation Army bound. No. Just somewhere else in the room. Well...me..I'd leave it where it is. You can gaze out the window while you're trying to unblock that writer thing that happens.

Besides, doesn't it upset Hamlet when there's too much moving around? You must consider that cats get discombulated when things aren't as they were.

I guess one must consider traffic and wear patterns in the carpeting, so go ahead and move things around. Hamlet will adjust. Or not.

    Shalom

It is a good idea to clear out your place occasionally - it's amazing how quickly our posessions pile up isn't it.

Having moved after breaking up with my ex, all I have with me now is my bed and my clothes....it feels good :)

While I don't have any furniture to get rid of, I did gift a coworker with some old pots and pans (copper-clad Revereware) that I didn't want in lieu of non-stick cookware. I only had so much room and finally gave myself permission to let the old stuff go. Just because I'd grown up using my mother's Revereware it didn't have to mean I was going to have to use it forever, and certainly didn't mean I had to keep it too. Plus my coworker is thrilled to have it herself so I'm doubly happy.

RYQ: Yeah, she's OK. No bruises. Her balance is poor, and she's had several spills in the last few months. Some of the spills have left her bruised, but no broken bones or head injuries.
