Fleece Dreams
Fri Dec 01 2006

I finally got to go see my spinning and knitting friend here in the mountains. We had a nice coze by the fire while she showed me a pair of socks that she is knitting. I learned a new stitch which I plan to use in the future. I tried it out when I got home, but I think that I might have to ask more questions about it to get it right. Oh how I wish I lived close by, I could learn from a master!

I asked her if she had been spinning much and the conversation came around to something called 'crimp', and I said what is crimp? Well, out came a plastic bag with a fleece in it and I found out. Evidently good spinning fleeces have these little crinkles in them that makes for good yarn. Who knew?

Then wonder of wonders she said that she would spin me some yarn. We struck a bargain and out came another bag filled to overflowing from a black sheep, though really it is the most wonderful deep brown coffee color you could ever imagine! It is just as it came off the sheep when it was shorn, full of lanolin and very clean too as I understand the woman who owns the sheep keeps them from the brambles and mud.

So, here is my friend and her fleece, that will someday be yarn, that God willing I will be skilled enough to make into a sweater:

I only hope that I will become a knitter worthy of such a wonderful prize.
Many thanks P. for your generous offer. I feel so special! And thank you too S. for sharing your friend with me.

I am sorting and packing my stuff to ride the bus home today. Six hours away. I hope to use the time to make some headway on a particularly slow project that frankly I will be glad to get off my needles.

So as of this afternoon, I will be .... homeward bound.

Farewell to my mountain friends and family. Thank you to Mamallama for the treasure trove of scrapbooking gifts and inspiration. Sorry I walked your legs off yesterday. You gotta stop me sooner next time, or we will be at the top of a mountain before you can say 'wooly wooly sheep'!

Very cool. As a kid we had a few sheep that a farmer used to come and sheer for us. We didn't have any black ones, but my, they are all so adorable, and that fleece - nothing better!

Fleece dreams? Dreaming of naked sheep? heh, heh

You didn't walk my legs off. It was wonderful. Maybe next time we will walk to the top!

You are welcome for all the creative stuff. You did a great job on your pages.

I can't bear to think of you leaving. I will miss so!

What a treat. That should make a wonderful sweater.

A lady from my quilt guild was knitting socks last night.....both at the same time on twin circular needles. I don't know how she kept it straight. I am certain I would have ended up with a pair conjoined at the ankles or something. It was interesting though.

I'm jealous! What a wonderful treasure of yarn in the fleece she has there, it makes me think about wanting to have my own sheep some day. Of course, I don't think I could talk Hubby into it, so there is no danger of me accidently nicking any of the little Baa-Baa's by accident while learning to shear!
For some reason I have this mental picture now of me chasing a sheep aroung with a Bic disposable razor yelling that it only hurts for a minute...

    What beautiful wool!

Our sheep are so naughty. And the one who ran off when we were having them shorn has never come back. She was a bad 'un.
