Lawbreaker
Tue Feb 13 2007

In the subdivision where we live, according to the homeowner's rules we are not supposed to have clotheslines. Of all the rules in that document, that one puzzles me the most. I cannot imagine anything more innocuous in a neighborhood than clothes hanging on the line....

I have an old wooden clothes rack that I have been using for quite some time to hang things out when I take a notion. But I decided I have to have a proper clothesline. It seems positively un-American not to.

Ergo, I have now officially become a rule breaker.

Can anarchy be far behind?

And what do you do with the clothesline when it's not occupied with drying linens?

I'd love to have a clothesline again. There's plenty of room between buildings where the kitchens face the yard.

You'll let us know if you're penalized by the Homeowners Society?

    Shalom

In my neighborhood we have a similar policy, and their reasoning behind it is that clotheslines are unsightly and make the houses look like they are lower in value.

I think it's silly, but somebody feels that clothes hanging on a line are offensive. I think those people need to take a reality check.

Try a good retractable one for they are there for only a short time and the tweetie birds don't
use it for a outhouse either.

Well, unless they plan to trespass into your back yard I think your rule breaking self is safe!

I knew a pharmacist who lived in a subdivision where they had to get permission to plant flowers or change house colors, even just trim. Nothing could clash with the neighbor's houses. lol. Couldn't pay me enough to live there! There was no color, just white, white, white.

While I may not like seeing people's undies flapping in the wind on a line, I CAN just look the other way. It's proposterous to think people won't break such ridiculous rules. I say go for it!

Your right! It is unamerican not to have a clothes line. LOL I don't live where that rule is but my husband thinks it is terrible because I want a clothes line off my back porch.Well, just wait until my knee gets well I will put my own line up.

We have that same "rule" in our neighborhood, and I never understood why either. (Especially since my previous house had huge, metal clothesline poles, cemented into the back patio--obviously not a rule that was enforced).

LOL - now, if you were planning on hanging out your laundry in the front yard I MIGHT be able to see the argument, but please... it's your backyard! Why should they care?
