Suburban Expedition
Wed May 16 2007

Sunny and I went on a little exploratory mission down to the old community garden site to see if any of the old fruit trees had anything on them this year. What we found were 3 dead , 1 dying and three others with nary a plum or apricot on them.

It's too bad.

So we walked out a ways, leaving the bike behind and I took these pictures:

The grasses aren't nearly so lush and tall this year. We haven't had the rain that we did last winter and spring. We kept going all the way to the creek, which is barely running. I think I saw a muskrat feeding mound, but couldn't be sure. A pair of mallards are hanging out near the bridge, I suppose they must have a nest somewhere. I couldn't spot it.

I wonder if the rains have gone for good. I always miss the rain around here in the summer. We can go for 6 full months and never see a drop. Maybe this year we will be lucky and have a thunderstorm or two.

One can hope.

What a wonderful place to go walking. And picking up ticks.

Too bad about the trees. The one tree that's dying...could it be brought back with a lot of TLC? I suppose there's no water source for the ones still alive (but non-producing) except the rain. Pity.

    Shalom

That is Sad!! Didn't they have water line where garden was?? I was wondering if they bush Hog that area when it dries out , if not it sure can be a fast grass fire in a heartbeat. Check yourself and Sunny for ticks real good..

I'm glad you have someplace close to home where you can walk Sunny. I love the little blessings.

The book should be at your place tomorrow or the next day since it went out today. It was fun even though I didn't have as much time to spend on it as I would have liked...not that I wasn't given the time, I have just been so busy. I enjoyed the few that were already completed and look forward to seeing all the others if you are able to get photos on your diary.

What a shame the trees in the community garden are not thriving. That is just plain sad.

Mark and the boys bought me a Satsuma plum tree for Mother's Day to replace one that collapsed under the weight of too much fruit a couple of years ago. I can hardly wait until it starts to bear fruit. The plums are the deepest wine color with a bold flavor unheard of in a plum. They make wonderful jam and syrup not to mention they are just plain tasty eating out of hand. :)

No rain around here either and the pastures are already being cut for hay. Pretty to watch them as I go to and from work but I wonder when we will see them green again.
